Benefits of Yoga
A consistent yoga practice can offer benefits in various dimensions of health:
- increases balance, joint movement, muscular strength, and coordination
- improves joint range of motion and flexibility
- improves posture which helps internal organs to function properly and improve breathing
- stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system
- improves circulation and lung capacity
- improves concentration and the ability to focus mentally
- improves kinesthetic awareness
- relieves stress, anxiety, and helps balance mood swings
- produces a positive effect on the immune system
- lowers blood pressure and heart rate
- decreases cholesterol and triglycerides
- may help other chronic conditions such as insomnia, asthma, back pain, arthritis
Instructions - Reflection and Yoga Goals
Based on the benefits listed above and the content of the videos answer the following questions in the discussion:
- After watching the TED Talk video, do you think changing the way you think about stress can make you healthier? Reflect and summarize the main concepts in the TED Talk. List an example of stress in your life or common stressor in people's lives and how changing the perspective (mindset) or what one can you do (actions) can make stress work in a positive way?
- After watching the meditation video, share your thoughts on the concepts of the video and if that changed your idea of when and "how-to" meditate.
- Create three goals/intentions you have for your yoga practice this term or goals in regards to stress reduction or meditation. Keep in mind that these goals can be physical, mental (emotional), and spiritual.
