ABOUT THIS ASSIGNMENT
This short assignment is the third step (of four) in your self-analysis process. Like your Personal Profile, Physical Profile and Vocal Profile, you'll be sharing this with your Classmate Portrayal partner so they can prepare their monologue portrayal of you. We'll also take a look at these Creative Profiles in class and see if we can match them with the person they depict.
Time to Allocate: 1/2 hr - 1 hr.
OBJECTIVE
The importance of this short creative assignment is in the conversation you have with yourself about what images, etc. you choose to use to create your collage or logo or coat of arms. It's not about creating a great work of art; it is about conveying your essence...taking something that is hard to put into words and trying to encapsulate it in some way, like a poem, a movie's iconic theme music, a haunting perfume, or a glass of delicious wine.
Essence: Your essential nature. Your spirit. Your core. What makes you "tick." Your "true self."
"Your essence drives your way of thinking, your values, your actions and ultimately your life path, whether you are conscious of it or not. Your essential nature is not your identity. It is not your body, appearance, your nationality, nor your roles in life..." [quote from Collins Dictionary]
INSTRUCTIONS
This short assignment allows you to capture and communicate your "essence" in a creative, visual manner.
Step 1) Start by thinking about yourself in a more abstract or symbolic way. How do you communicate your inner life (what you value, feel, want, see the world, etc.)? How do you communicate your energy and spirit (are you linear and tidy? wonderfully scattered and easily excited? Are you bright and dynamic? mellow and thoughtful? etc.) If you were a color or a shape, what would it be? etc.
Step 2) You have three ways you can create your Creative Profile, by making a Personal Collage, a Personal Logo, or a Personal Coat of Arms. Choose the one below in red that works for you!
Personal Collage: Find images (photos, magazine cutouts, printouts of online images, hand-drawn, etc.), words, scraps of cloth, textures (feathers, sandpaper, foil, etc.) that capture the essence of you. Arrange them in a collage on a piece of card stock, poster board, or paper; no smaller than 8 1/2" x 11 and no larger than 11" x 17." Put your name on the BACK of your collage.
Personal Logo: Take a few minutes and look at famous logos online. Whether it's the Nike swish, the Google rainbow-colored G, or the McDonald's golden arches, when a business or organization creates a logo, a lot of thought goes into every aspect - the shape, colors, images, words, etc. Then, create and convey your own personal logo on a piece of card stock, poster board, or paper; no smaller than 8 1/2" x 11 and no larger than 11" x 17." Put your name on the BACK of your logo page.
Personal Coat of Arms: [Please do not use your real family coat of arms; create a new one!] Take a few minutes to look at actual coats of arms online (the really interesting ones), just to give you a sense of the shapes, colors, etc. (Keep in mind that the world of heraldry is quite ancient and complex; don't worry about following all those rules!) Then, create and convey your personal coat of arms on a piece of card stock, poster board, or paper; no smaller than 8 1/2" x 11 and no larger than 11" x 17." Put your name on the BACK of the paper with your coat of arms.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ASSIGNMENT
1. Bring your completed Creative Project to class on the due date...AND...
2. Submit a copy or photo of your completed Creative Project here. If you take a photo, use the Images icon in the tool bar to submit. (We can help you do that in class, if you aren't sure how to do so.)
Have Fun!
