THAR 10B: Vocal Profile
INSTRUCTIONS
Conduct a detailed analysis of your own vocal attributes, quality, speech patterns, and habits, inspired by the vocal inventory tools from the textbook (Ch. 3). Suggestion - Record yourself talking for a few minutes to help yourself with this analysis; you can also gather feedback from friends, relatives, and/or other acquaintances (BUT make sure that they focus on supportive feedback, not negative judgements). In preparation, it can also be helpful to complete the Vocal Health form (posted on Canvas by 2/7/25-not required, just helpful).
This self-study will result in your written profile (a minimum of 2 pgs. or approx. 750 words).* Enter your Vocal Profile in the Text Entry box or create a separate file and upload it. After submission, your completed Vocal Profile will be read by your Classmate Portrayal partner(s) and instructor only. (You can send a copy directly to your partner(s), but I will also assign your partner(s) as your assignment "reviewer", which allows them to see it.)
Format: The format is fairly flexible; you can arrange your Vocal Profile in narrative paragraphs, lists, or bullet points. However, it should be typed and detailed. Arrange your physical analysis in categories as discussed in Ch. 3 of your textbook (including VOCAL Influences, Adaptations, and Cultural Binding).
[*OPTION: If you find it difficult to write down your vocal analysis answers, you can make an audio recording of your analysis answers. In your recording, make sure that you address all the "ingredients" of the Vocal Recipe, Vocal Influences/Adaptions/Cultural Binding, and key elements of your Vocal History and Health.]
Preparation Tip: As you prepare your Profile, think of this...another actor (someone who doesn't know you) should be able to pick up your Vocal Profile and create a fairly accurate portrayal of your vocal attributes, quality, speech patterns, and habits by reading and following the details in your Profile. Help the reader "hear" you!
