Welcome to Online Yoga ~ KFIT 6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3

You are in the right place if you signed up for Introduction to Yoga, Beginning Yoga, Intermediate or Advanced Yoga. 

This is an asynchronous course, meaning this course is all done online through Canvas and there are no zoom meetings. For attendance and participation points you will be asked to do 2 to 3 weekly pre-recorded video yoga practices and submit your time-lapse video in the assignments by Sunday at 11:55pm.

Please know that you will lose 10% of your points on any submission per day it is late, so if you are 3 days late for a 10 point submission, you will receive 7 of those 10 points. I will not deduct beyond that. If you submit, no matter how late, you can still receive up to 70%, so DO complete assignments even if you missed the due date. I set the gradebook up so that you will see 0 points for missing submissions, but you can certainly submit and that grade will update. Course Description

Introduction Yoga Course DescriptionThis introductory level class is designed for students with no previous yoga experience. Students will use Hatha yoga asanas (postures) to practice introductory level flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. Students will use yoga techniques including breath and relaxation methods for mind-body connection and centering.

Beginning Yoga Course Description: This beginning level class is designed for individuals with no previous yoga experience, Using Hatha yoga asanas (postures), students will emphasize beginning level flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. Yoga techniques for mind-body connection and centering will include breathing and relaxation methods.

Intermediate Yoga Course Description: This intermediate level class is designed for individuals with previous yoga experience. Using Hatha yoga asanas (postures), students will emphasize intermediate level flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination.  Course covers the history of yoga, chakras, meditation, and the eight limbs of yoga.

Advanced Yoga Course Description: This advanced level class is designed for individuals with significant yoga experience. Using Hatha yoga asana (postures), students will emphasize advanced level flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. Yoga techniques will include breath and relaxation methods for mind-body connection and centering.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate introductory level Hatha yoga asanas and techniques.
  2. Improve flexibility, muscular strength, balance, and coordination.
  3. Properly demonstrate breathing and centering yoga methods.

Beginning Yoga Student Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate beginning level Hatha yoga asanas and techniques.
  2. Create a beginning level yoga practice designed to improve flexibility, muscular strength, balance, and coordination.
  3. Describe beginning relaxation, breathing and centering yoga methods.

Intermediate Student Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate intermediate level Hatha yoga asanas and techniques.
  2. Create an intermediate level yoga practice designed to improve flexibility, muscular strength, balance, and coordination
  3. Describe the historical origins of yoga and the eight limbs associated with a holistic yoga practice.

Advanced Student Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to perform advanced level asanas (postures) and yoga techniques.
  2. Create an advanced level Yoga practice designed to improve flexibility, muscular strength, balance, and coordination.
  3. Describe relaxation, breathing and centering methods used in Yoga.

Students will use the Canvas course web site for accessing videos and submitting time-lapse replay videos. Students will also use Canvas for things like accessing assignment instructions, submitting assignments, viewing classmate's work, sharing resources, and viewing grades.

Pass-NoPass (P/NP)

If you want to take this class P/NP please check with a counselor. If you are able to take this class P/NP, you must decide to do so before the deadline, and add the option online in your portal or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. See deadline for P/NP under "Important Dates" above. With a grade of C or better, you will get P. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade.

I will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as I create an announcement. 

In order to check your notification settings; please click on ‘Account’ in the upper left hand corner when you are logged into canvas, then click on ‘notifications’.  If you are logged into canvas, the communication settings link should take you straight to the page.

I highly recommend that you update your user settings to make sure that you receive the following right away (Click the check mark – notify me right away) for:

  1. Announcement: this is how I will communicate with the entire class 
  2. Submission comment: this is how I will give you personal feedback on your assignments
  3. Conversation message: this is where I send students private messages through Canvas 

Feel free to change the settings on any others based on your personal preferences. 


Physical and Mental Health 

Should you experience any physical or mental health issues, know that all of us at SRJC care about your well-being. SRJC’s Student Health Services (SHS) has nurse practitioners and mental health therapists available. Confidential sessions are provided via secure Zoom or in-person. Sessions are free for SRJC students taking credit or non-credit classes, and some providers can converse with you in Spanish if you prefer. SHS also has on-site covid rapid testing and vaccinations available also at no cost. Options for Participation 

Since this is a movement-based class, regular attendance and participating in the yoga practices are critical for success in this course. Attendance and participation will require that you do pre-recorded yoga practices and submit your time-lapse video in the assignments by Friday and Sundays at 11:55pm.  Typically, the first video class is due by Friday and 2nd video-class is due by Sunday. Two sessions will be required each week. If you have an injury or illness, contact the instructor for a gentler option for a yoga practice for the week. 


Make-up Policy

You may turn in recorded time-lapse video of you doing a recorded practice late for partial credit. 


Attendance

If you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact me to avoid being dropped from the class.


Course Evaluation

Yoga Practice Participation – 150 points (5 points for each session x 30 sessions)

Class Assignments/Discussions - 60 points overall 

Personal Yoga Practice Assignment - 10 points

Mid Term Exam – 14 points

Final Exam – 19 points

Skill Performance- 70 points

Total = 323 points

*Points are subject to change based on the number of assignments, discussions, and quizzes that are assigned. If any changes are made in the syllabus, or in grading, I will post an announcement. 


Grading Policy

Visit theGradesin Canvas to keep track of your grades. Grades are posted on the Canvas gradebook.

Exams

There will be an online midterm and final exam. It is your responsibility to take the online exams by the due date.


Late Policy

All assignments are due by 11:55pm on the due date. Late submissions may be accepted at the discretion of the instructor but will not receive full credit. If a student would like full credit for late work due to an unforeseen emergency, the student can provide written documentation to the instructor. Always include your section number with any communication with the instructor. 


Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.Links to an external site.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:
