Dropping the Class

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it to avoid getting no refund (after 10% of course length), a W symbol (after 20%), or a grade (after 60%). Also, for several consecutive, unexplained absences, the instructor may drop a student.

Instructor Announcements

I will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. You will be notified according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as I creates an Announcement.

Attendance/Participation

Students who fail to attend the first class (Zoom) or in person may be dropped from the class. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact me to avoid being dropped from the class.

Regular attendance is critical for success in this course.  Participation consists of attending class in the classroom or live on Zoom,  participating in the entire class period and participating in the class activity based on your personal fitness level.  Arriving late, leaving early or giving minimal effort will negatively affect this portion of your grade.  If you arrive after roll call (face to face class), it is your responsibility to check in after class to receive credit. If you are live on Zoom, I will be giving participation points based on the minutes you were checked in on Zoom. Your Zoom name must be the same as on the roster.  If you must leave early on a rare occasion, please let me know before class begins. If you miss the class, you may watch the recording, and I will give you 5 questions to answer and turn in for credit. Zoom will give me a report on the time you spent viewing the recording.  Each class missed will be a 5 point deduction from your total of 85 points.  Tardiness will result in a 2-5 pt loss for that class. (85 pts)

Class

Classes held in the lecture room (PC641) will consist of lecture, video, discussions, demonstrations, planks and group work. Classes held in the gym (PC805) will consist of demonstrations, core work, group work and discussion. Up to 2 classes may be Zoom only or pre-recorded lectures for you to watch on your own time.

Exams

There will be 7 quizzes and exams. The material comes from the textbook, class lectures and supplemental materials. If any exam is missed, a zero will be recorded as the score. It is your responsibility to take the online exams by the due date. (180 points)

Assignments

There will be 10 assignments during the semester.  Instructions and due dates will be found online.  10% off per day if received after the due date.  No assignments will be accepted after 9 without prior discussion with instructor.

  • Group projects and assignments.  You will be placed in random groups during class time to complete 2 assignments and 1 project over the course of the semester.  Instructions and due dates will be given at that time.  Groups will turn in a assignment/project per group and will be scored as a group. (150 total pts)

Late Policy

All assignments and exams are due 11:55 on the due date unless otherwise noted. A late submission will receive a 10% penalty for each day late. Exams and assignments not accepted after 9 days pass the due date.

Netiquette, or Why Is It Harder to Be Polite Online?

Netiquette refers to using common courtesy in online communication. All members of the class are expected to follow netiquette in all course communications. Use these guidelines:

  • Use capital letters sparingly. THEY LOOK LIKE SHOUTING.
  • Forward emails only with a writer's permission.
  • Be considerate of others' feelings and use language carefully.
  • Cite all quotations, references, and sources (otherwise, it is plagiarism).
  • Use humor carefully. It is hard to "read" tone; sometimes humor can be misread as criticism or personal attack. Feel free to use emoticons like :) for a smiley face to let others know you are being humorous.
  • Use complete sentences and standard English grammar to compose posts. Write in proper paragraphs. Review work before submitting it.
  • Text speak, such as "ur" for "your" or "ru" for "are you" etc., is only acceptable when texting.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.

Online Students: During class, please keep interruptions to a minimum. I realize that while some of you are learning from home, it can be impossible to stop distractions so do your best.  All of us can benefit by  putting our cell phones on silent and keeping them out of sight to help stay attentive. You are welcome to raise your hand or unmute to ask questions only if the question relates to what we are discussing at that time.  Please save all other questions for the break or at the end of class.

Acts of dishonesty (for example, cheating or plagiarism) will be cause for disciplinary action. Consequences may include receiving an F on a particular assignment/exam, and/or further disciplinary action by SRJC. Being disruptive in class also affects your peers. You will be asked to leave if the instructor believes that you are being disruptive. If disruptive behavior continues, you may be suspended (EC Sec 73031).

Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to: use of cell phones, texting, rude or inappropriate comments, reading or working on outside material, talking to others while the instructor or another student is addressing the class, making excessive or unnecessary noise, repeatedly entering or leaving class during class time, interruptive or repeated irrelevant questions or comments, habitual profanity or vulgarity, physically or verbally abusive, eating in class, attention-seeking or distracting activity, and persistent abuse of College personnel requiring inordinate drains on staff time, resources, and supervision.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:

Special Needs

Students with disabilities who believe they need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disability Resources (527-4278), as soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion.
