Week 3 Page #4: Interface
Interface Considerations |
The interface design of a site affects not only the "atmosphere" of a site, but also how visitors see and interact with the content. It is the system they use to access what they are looking for or complete an action. Remember that each user interprets the interface in their own unique way and their reactions to it are subjective based on past experiences and also on the device they are using. A designer needs to create an interface that is understandable and accessible to the greatest possible number of individuals and devices. It needs to be clear and simple! A user should never have to wonder what an icon means or whether they need to click or swipe an element. They should never have to work to complete a task. The system (or interface) should offer them the easiest path. Look at the following screen shot of a mortgage company's site. The content is clearly organized into categories and links. The interface design is clear and simple! The main calls to action are clearly highlighted: "E-mail Us" and "Apply Online Now!" Interface is so crucial to the success of a site that it requires careful planning and thought. It plays a fundamental role in graphic design, screen layout and structural decisions. A successful interface design is "transparent" to users and allows them to access the content with relative ease. They should not have to struggle to figure out how the interface works nor should it be a barrier to reading the content.
