Bread Givers Essay Due on 11/28

Using Bread Givers, write a 4-6 page double spaced paper on the following:

What does Sara Smolinsky identify with?

You can answer this question any way that you want, but you need to state your answer clearly in your thesis and then use the body of your paper to support your thesis.  In order to do this you must use cited examples from the novel within your paper.  Please be sure to underline your thesis in the copy that you pass in, if you do not, I will deduct 10 points.

This paper needs to 4-6 pages long (1000-1250 words) and must be passed in at the start of class on the 28th.   Additionally, you will submit a copy directly here on the Canvas page.

On Thursday the 9th please bring 2 typed copies of a working thesis and an outline to class.  This will be a 10 point HW assignment and no late assignments will be taken.  

Please note that for out of class writing, spelling, grammar, clarity, organization, and structure are all important and will be part of your grade in addition to content.   

Please remember that you need to write this paper yourself and papers that are not original will receive a failing grade.  No late papers will be accepted

 Example of a thesis and outline:

Essay Question:   How is religion presented in Bread Givers?   This is not your question---your question is about identity.

Possible thesis:   Reb Smolinsky was regularly practicing his religion throughout the novel.

Better thesis:  Reb Smolinksy uses religion to explain why he deserves his own room, should be able to choose his daughters’ husbands, and can dictate to Sarah and Hugo how they should live their lives.

OUTLINE:

Point 1:  Reb gets his own room so that he can study his religious books.

Quote:  “MY holy books always were an always will be the light of the world…No one was allowed to put their things in Father’s room.”  (Yezierska, p. 9)

Analysis:  Reb argues that since only he and his studies can bring his wife and daughters into heaven, he must have a room to himself in their 3 room apt.

This is the format that I want to see.  Remember to have a point, quote, and analysis for each part of your thesis.
