Catalog Description

Students seeking to complete the Pilates Reformer Instructor Certificate will gain experience through practical application and supervised practice of lead instructional techniques. Students will assist faculty in areas of administration, classroom management, teaching techniques, and instruction.

Student Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Develop written lesson plans for Pilates Reformer class.
2. Instruct an entire class using appropriate communication and Pilates Reformer instructional methods and skills.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Identify and implement the components of a lesson plan with clear objectives and learning outcomes.
2. Demonstrate communication skills pertaining to group and individual instruction using appropriate cueing, terminology, and student feedback.
3. Demonstrate appropriate Pilates Reformer exercise selection and order, using proper technique and safety in individual and group instruction.
4. Demonstrate standard safety skills in selected equipment and activities.
5. Provide appropriate options for multi-level participants and various health conditions.
6. Apply instructional methods, classroom management techniques, and administration organization for a particular activity to teaching experiences in a practical setting.
7. Assess and analyze personal experience and current strengths and areas of development as a lead instructor.

Attendance, Punctuality, and Participation Policy 

Program Attendance Requirements (Important)

Pilates Method Alliance Links to an external site.(PMA) and the National Pilates Certification Program Links to an external site. (NPCP) requires instructor training students to complete established contact hours. 

SRJC’s Pilates Comprehensive Certificate program curriculum,  coursework, assignments, exams, and required participation, observation, self-practice, and practice teaching hours support students’ successfully meeting the these requirements to sit for the National Pilates Certification Exam and to have the practical skills and confidence to become a Pilates instructors. 

Please note the following attendance requirements for successful completion of the SRJC Comprehensive Pilates Certificate Program. These requirements are established to meet the mandatory training-hour standards set by the NPCP for eligibility to sit for the Comprehensive Pilates Instructor Exam.

  • The SRJC Comprehensive Pilates Certificate Program requires a minimum of 90% attendance in all courses.

  • KIN 50.4 meets for a total of 52.5 instructional hours.

  • Students who miss more than 10% of total class hours (more than 6 hours) will be dropped from the course.

  • Students who anticipate difficulty meeting attendance requirements are strongly encouraged to withdraw and re-enroll in a future term when they can fully commit to attendance.

  • Absences require notification to the instructor PRIOR to the missed class whenever possible.

  • Please note that instructors are not required, and it may not be feasible, to provide makeup assignments for missed instructional content or in-class training hours.


Attendance & Participation (100 Points Total)

  • All students begin the course with 100 Participation/Attendance points.

  • Attendance is required for skill development, safety, and successful completion of course objectives.

  • Missing more than 6 total hours of class time during the semester will result in a Participation/Attendance grade of 0/100, regardless of reason.

  • All absences count equally. There are no excused or unexcused absences.

  • In all circumstances, not being present during scheduled class time results in loss of Participation/Attendance points.

  • Some individual assignments may be eligible for partial or full makeup credit at the instructor’s discretion; however, in-class group activities, skill-based practice, and movement instruction cannot be made up outside of class.


Punctuality

  • Punctuality is required at the start of each class meeting.

  • Being on time and prepared reflects the professional expectations of Pilates instruction.

  • Points will be deducted for tardiness or leaving early:

    • 1–10 minutes: –5 points

    • 11–40 minutes: –10 points

    • 41–60 minutes: –15 points

    • More than 60 minutes: counts as 1 hour absent

  • The same deductions apply for leaving early.

  • Attendance is taken at the start of class.

  • If you must leave early on a rare occasion, inform the instructor before class begins.


Participation Expectations

To earn full Participation/Attendance points, students must:

  • Attend class regularly and participate for the entire class period.

  • Actively engage in Pilates practice, demonstrations, practice teaching, and learning activities.

  • Arrive prepared and ready to participate.

  • Follow instructor directions to the best of their ability.

  • Late arrival, early departure, or lack of participation will reduce Participation/Attendance points.

  • If a movement is not appropriate for your body, or if you have medical restrictions, notify the instructor and modify the movement.

    • Appropriate modifications do not negatively impact your Participation/Attendance grade.
