Course Description
Art 1.2 is an introductory art appreciation course that surveys global artistic styles, including European, African, Asian, Oceanic, and American, from 1500 C.E. through contemporary times. The course focuses on the development, diversity, and interaction of art and cultural traditions and emphasizes comparisons of western and non-western visual expression as a reflection of differing cultural perspectives.
Student Learning Outcomes
Course Materials
There are no required textbooks or materials for this class! This class is an "Open Educational Resources" class, meaning that all course materials will be provided in the course.
Class Meetings
100% online and asynchronous, meaning that there are no required Zoom meetings. You will watch the lecture videos at your convenience.
Instructor Announcements & Messages
Students are expected to read ALL instructor announcements and will be held responsible for the content of those announcements. Please set up your notifications (especially in the Canvas mobile app) to get these announcements in the way you prefer (email or text or both).
Instructor Contact
Please email me ONLY via Canvas Inbox for all course related issues. I prefer to be addressed as Dr. Saleh or Prof. Saleh, and I respond to emails within 24-48 hours except on weekends and holidays.
Office Hours
I host office hours on Tuesdays from 1:30 - 3 pm and by appointment. You'll have the option to meet with me online via Zoom or in-person in my office located in the Art Gallery.
Teaching Assistant
We're grateful to have a fantastic TA: Amanda Liszewski. You can contact the TA via Canvas Inbox, as well. Your TA is knowledgeable, experienced, friendly, and here to support YOU.
Standards of Conduct
Students must follow the SRJC Student Conduct Code and Academic Integrity Policy. Any act of academic dishonesty results in an automatic 0 for the assignment with no chance to resubmit. Furthermore, receiving a zero makes you ineligible for all extra credit at the end of the semester.
Due Dates
Assignments are due before 11:59 pm PST on the due date. All due dates are subject to change, and changes will be sent through announcements in Canvas.
Late Policy
Late submission of required assignments will be deducted 5% off for each day past the due date. It's not advisable to re-do or re-submit work more than a week after a deadline has passed (in order to improve a grade), since the late penalties will negate any benefits. And no work will be accepted after the last day of class.
Quizzes
Each module will include a multiple-choice quiz to test your understanding of the materials presented. You are allowed to take each quiz up to 5 times, and your highest score will be recorded.
Discussion Board Posts
To earn full credit and maintain eligibility for end-of-semester extra credit, every module post must include:
-
Human-First & Original Content: A unique post of 100+ words reflecting your own ideas. Do not choose the same example provided by the instructor in the prompt.
-
Lecture Timestamp: One specific timestamp (MM:SS) from the recorded lecture to prove engagement.
-
AI Disclosure: A statement at the end: [No AI used] OR [Used (Tool Name) for: (Outline/Grammar/etc.)].
- Citations: Works cited in MLA-style.
-
Peer Reply: A 50+ word response to a classmate must be posted within 24 hours of the discussion post deadline (i.e. the very next night before 11:59 pm).
⚠️ Warning: Any post flagged for plagiarism or exceeding the 25% AI limit results in a 0 and disqualifies you from all future extra credit
AI & Originality Policy
AI tools can assist with organizing thoughts or refining grammar, but they must not serve as your primary voice or source of ideas. Additionally, we expect full citations for images and sources that help you prepare your post. Consult this link on Plagiarism to ensure that your writing is your own.
-
AI and Plagiarism Limit: Any submission flagged as over 25% AI-generated via Copyleaks and/or over 25% plagiarized by Turnitin will receive an automatic 0 with no chance to resubmit. I reserve the right to use additional AI-detection and plagiarism-detection software as needed.
-
Prohibited Tools: Using "Humanizer" tools to bypass detection is a direct violation of academic integrity. Using video transcript
-
Verification: I reserve the right to request an Authorship Interview during office hours to discuss your writing process if a post is flagged.
Feedback & Re-Submission Policy
All grades include specific feedback in the Canvas Gradebook. Check your rubric and comments to understand your score before reaching out. Your eligibility for re-submission depends on why the assignment received a 0:
| Status | Reason for Score | Re-submission Rule |
| 🔴 Ineligible | Academic Integrity: Plagiarism or undisclosed AI use. | No re-submissions. You are also disqualified from extra credit. |
| 🟢 Eligible | Technical/Content Errors: Wrong topic, missing disclosure, missing timestamps, or incomplete work. | One re-submission allowed. Max score: 5 points (before late penalties). |
If you are eligible for a re-submission, follow these 3 steps exactly:
-
Delete your original post (See: How to delete replies).
-
Post your new, revised version.
-
Comment on the assignment in the Gradebook asking for a re-grade.
⚠️ Important Note on Deadlines: Your re-grade request comment marks your new submission date. Late penalties will be calculated based on the day you leave that comment, not the original deadline nor the resubmission timestamp.
Extra Credit
Extra credit is intended to boost your existing grade, not to replace missing coursework. To qualify for extra credit, you must complete all required assignments with no scores of zero.
-
How to Unlock: The Extra Credit Module will automatically unlock once every required module and assignment is submitted.
-
Availability: Additional opportunities may be offered throughout the semester. However, these points will only be applied if you meet the "no zeros" requirement by the end of the term.
Grading Policy
| Grade | Percentage |
|---|---|
| A | 90% or more |
| B | 80-89% |
| C | 70-79% |
| D | 69-60% |
| F | 59% or less |
Final grades will not be rounded-up under any circumstance. If you are taking this course on a pass/no-pass basis, then you must earn at least a C letter-grade to receive credit for the course.
