Chakras
Chakras (“wheels”) are a series of seven commonly recognized energy centers in line with the spine. By learning to control breathing and by practice of physical postures, practitioners can learn to open, balance and activate the chakras, eventually fulfilling spiritual potential. Chakras relate to prana as they store and release prana (life force energy).
Chakra | Sanskrit Name | Color | Sound | Location | Description | |
1 | Root |
Muladhara |
Red |
Lam |
Base of spine, includes legs as roots |
Since the root chakra corresponds to the element earth, it represents everything solid, the practical aspects of our lives, basic survival and physical needs. This includes your basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as your more emotional needs such as trust and letting go of fear. Its purpose is to ground us and give us stability, a foundation for growth in other areas. |
2 | Sacral | Svadhisthana | Orange | Vam |
Above the pubic bone in the pelvic region, below the naval and includes the genital region |
The Second Chakra is also known as the creativity and sexuality chakra. A balanced second chakra leads to feelings of emotional balance, sexual wellness, abundance, pleasure, and joy. When this chakra is out of balance, a person may experience a fear of change, emotional instability, sexual dysfunction, depression, or addictions. |
3 | Solar Plexus | Manipura | Yellow | Ram |
Around your navel and the upper abdomen, below the rib cage. |
The third chakra is our source of personal power for transformation and directs our self-esteem and self-confidence. Our belief in ourselves. If the chakra is too open there may be a desire to be in too much control, to dominate and seek power or prestige, a more ego-driven objective. Third chakra excess can make a person narcissistic or self-centered. |
4 | Heart | Anahata | Green | Yam | Center of the chest | Empathy, love, relationships, compassion, forgiveness, and healing. Acceptance of others and self. Grief, anger, jealousy, fear of betrayal, and hatred toward yourself and others are symbols of a closed heart chakra. |
5 | Throat | Vishuddha | Sky Blue | Hum | At the throat |
Authentic self-expression and communication. Are you speaking your truth or saying what you think the other person wants to hear? Fear of rejection or judgment from the others may inhibit our expression. By working on the lower chakras and gaining a sense of personal power and knowing what’s in your heart helps one speak from the heart with genuine confidence. Effectively communicating your needs, desires, and opinions to be true to yourself and others. |
6 | Third Eye | Ajna | Indigo Blue | Sham | Space above and between the eyebrows |
Inner knowing, intuition, wisdom, sixth sense. Ability to trust in our internal feelings and spiritual guidance.
|
7 | Crown | Sahaswara | Violet | Om | Located at crown (top) of head |
Our source of enlightenment and spiritual connection to all that is. Connection to our spirituality, higher selves, to every other being on the planet, and the divine energy that creates everything in the universe. Transcendence, being connected with higher planes of pure consciousness. |
