THAR 10B: Personal Profile Instructions
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Choose One of Two Options for Your Personal Profile
As the first step in our Classmate Portrayal unit, you'll introduce yourself by creating a short “autobiography", either written or filmed.
Option 1 - Written Personal Profile: Aim for the equivalent of about 2 typed pages (700-1000 words) and just "talk" to the reader on the page, like you might in an email to someone you are meeting for the first time. It's okay if it is a bit longer, but keep the length reasonable (so you don't exhaust yourself and fall behind on other school work). This is not a formal paper so don't worry about putting it into a specific format or "scholarly language." Be yourself!
Option 2 - Filmed Personal Profile: Film a 5-7 minute introduction as if you were talking to one of us, following the same content criteria as a written Personal Profile. Before you do so, put together a simple outline to help guide you. Canvas has a recording feature, Studio, that you can use, or you can film yourself using an app on your phone or other device. If you want to have someone help you by asking you prompt questions, that's fine, but make sure that you are doing the majority of the talking. Also: Use a neutral background when you film; wear a solid outfit that contrasts with your background (not white or red, please); make sure you are well-lit; and test your microphone in advance to make sure it is fully picking up what you are saying.
CONTENT
What do I include in my Personal Profile?
Whether written or filmed, the content is totally up to you, but should include some details about your Past and Present, and a peek into your Future (future goals, etc.). If you need help figuring out what to say, refer to the “Personal Awareness” pages in Ch. 3 in your textbook. My personal bio, "Meet Your Instructor" might also give you an idea of how to approach it.
If you get stuck: Imagine someone is asking you some of the questions in Ch. 3 under "Personal Awareness". Using your phone, record yourself answering those questions. Then, just listen to yourself and type up what you just said in your recording.
What is okay/not okay to share?
This is your story, so you get to choose what to talk about and the words you use to do so. The experiences of our life, both good and bad, are all part of what shapes us. Still, be mindful of taking care of yourself; make sure you are not forcing yourself to write about issues/events/memories that start generating too much anxiety or pain. If that starts to happen, just write or say something like, "I went through a rough time that is still hard to talk about." and leave it at that.
WHO WILL SEE MY PERSONAL PROFILE?
Initially, only your instructor (and our TA) will see it. However, when we begin the Classmate Portrayal assignment, your assignment partner(s) will be allowed to see it on Canvas, as well.
