Course Syllabus
Greetings ASL Students,
Congratulation! I am pleased to welcome you to ASL 1, Section 0067, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Before our first class, please review the syllabus carefully, as it contains essential information regarding required materials, grading criteria, and assignments. During the first week, I will go over the syllabus in detail and address any questions you may have to ensure a strong start in the course. While I will explain everything during our first class session, reviewing the syllabus beforehand will be highly beneficial.
Attached, you will find the Syllabus Agreement Acknowledgment, which must be completed and submitted. This acknowledgment ensures that you have read and understood the course expectations outlined in the syllabus.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out—I am here to support you.
First Assignment: Reflective Summary #1 (RS#1)
The first assignment, Reflective Summary #1 (RS#1), includes the American Deaf Culture Quiz. Instructions are provided below. I recommend reviewing the quiz before the first class session. Please do not be concerned if some responses are incorrect—this simply indicates that you are in the appropriate environment to begin learning about ASL, Deaf culture, history, and linguistic structures. If you get a few answers wrong, no worries—that just means you’re in the perfect place to learn and grow.

All syllabus materials and assignments, including RS#1, are available on Canvas:

I encourage you to read the syllabus and the RS#1 assignment prior to our first class. Do not be discouraged if quiz responses are inaccurate—learning is a progressive journey, and this course is designed to support your development in ASL proficiency and cultural competence.
I look forward to a productive and intellectually enriching semester with all of you.
