Please complete Section 2.7 BEFORE you begin this Assignment.
US Geologic Service (USGS) maps are contour maps that are used to visualize the topography of the United States for everything from planning a hike to scientific surveys. The USGS has been America's civilian mapping agency since 1879. Today these maps are prepared from GIS databases and are available in both paper and digital form.
In this assignment, you will answer some questions about the digital USGS map for the Mt. Konocti area of Lake County.
Answers should be in feet and must come from map interpretation. Answers in meters will not be accepted. If you Google the answer it will not match what you can see on the match and I will mark you incorrect.
Here are the steps to completing this Assignment:
- Navigate to the USGS "TopoView Links to an external site." website
- Using the search bar in the upper right corner, search for "Kelseyville"
- Scroll through the maps listed on the right side to the bottom and select the 2018 Map
- Load the map (you can enlarge the map by clicking on it) and answer the following questions:
-
- What is the scale of this map? (please give me the Scale expressed as a Representative Fraction)
- What is the contour interval for this map?
- What is the highest point on this map? What is the elevation of that peak?
- Find "South Peak" in the upper North East quadrant of the map. Which side of the mountain would be the least steep hike up the mountain? The north, south, east or west? How can you tell?
- What is the elevation of South Peak?
- What is the elevation of Mt. Hannah? (eastern edge of map south central)
- What is the elevation of Kelseyville?
- Using the "Graphic Scale" on the map, physically measure the east/west diameter of Bogg's Lake in feet (Southeast portion of the map) Take a piece of paper an carefully mark the edges of Bogg's Lake (don't damage your computer screen). Then physically measure that distance on the graphic scale in feet. You should measure Bogg's Lake where its East West diameter is greatest.
