FALL 2023 - Project Description
Our class has been invited to create a series of lighted sculptures for the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. This year, as part of our class, you will create large, 3-dimensional wire portraits of classmates, friends, or family in the style of Alexander Calder (See The Calder Project for reference). Normally, we create these wire portraits in the course of one class period or as a homework assignment. Your small wire portraits will act as maquettes. The class will then critique the portraits and a collection will be voted on to be enlarged with rebar.
After enlargement, these pieces will be lighted, or painted with da-glow colors. The rebar portraits will be delivered to the LBC and mounted to a fence. Student participation will be requested.
The LBC will pay for all materials, and the works will be exhibited for the winter. Installation will take place in early or mid November.
