FALL 2022 - Art 5 Student Rebar Sculptures
In November of 2022, students in my 3D Design and sculpture classes were given one day to conceptualize lighted sculptures, to be constructed and installed a few days later.
The initial concepts were created in miniature out of 1/16" diameter welding wire, 36" long. These maquettes, or miniature sculpture models, were proposals to be voted on by the entire class. The winners were to be made full scale. The welding rods represented 20' long x 3/8" diameter rebar. So upon scaling to full size, the students knew how many rebar pieces were required. The rebar purchased from Home Depot, delivered, and bent by hand into the structures - on site, and zip tied together.
The LBC supplied LED lights that were applied to the full-scale sculptures.
The entire LBC sculpture garden was lit up with lights, including trees and two bridges that were arched with wire. Existing sculptures that were on exhibit were draped with lights. The light show was up for nearly two months.
