While studying developmental theory and investigative research methodologies, students will observe children, evaluate individual differences, and analyze characteristics of development at various stages.

Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 100 or ESL 100. Transferability: CSU, UC. Repeatability: Two repeats if grade was D, F, NC, or NP.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe major developmental milestones for children from conception through adolescence in the areas of biosocial, psychosocial, and cognitive development.
  2. Examine the multiple influences affecting children's development.
  3. Compare and contrast various theoretical frameworks that relate to the study of child development.
  4. Apply developmental theory to analyze child observations, surveys, and/or interviews.

Class Meetings

In this course, everything is asynchronous. There are no synchronous meetings or Zoom lectures. Assignments must be completed before the deadline, but otherwise, you work at your own pace.

Office hours are available on Fridays at 7:30am and Tuesdays at 4:00pm over zoom (see Module 1 for zoom link).

Course Web Site

Students will use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, submitting assignments, viewing classmate's work, sharing resources, and viewing grades.

Announcements

The instructor may use Canvas Announcements for urgent and important messages, so it’s strongly suggested that you set your Canvas notification preferences for Announcement to “Notify me right away.” See these Canvas help resources:

Textbook

In this class, we use a free, Open Education Resource textbook, Understanding the Whole Child. It is made available to you in Canvas.

Last Day to Add with instructor's approval: September 8

Dropping the Class

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it to avoid getting no refund (after 10% of course length), a W symbol (after 20%), or a grade (after 60%). Also, for several consecutive, unexplained absences, the instructor may drop a student.

Pass‐NoPass (P/NP)

You may take this class P/NP. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online with TLC or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. With a grade of C or better, you will get P.

You must file for the P/NP option by the date listed above. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade. If you are taking this course as part of a certificate program, you can probably still take the class P/NP. Check with a counselor to be sure.

Attendance

Students who do not log-in to an online class after the second week will be dropped from the class. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact me to avoid being dropped from the class.

Late Policy

All assignments are due at 11:59pm on the due date. All assignments can be turned in up to 9 hours late with no penalty (i.e., by 9:00 AM after it's due).

I will grade assignments that are turned in up to 7 days late for partial credit.

I do understand that life happens and it's not always possible to turn things in on time due to life circumstances. I will grade late assignments that are turned in within 7 days of the due date for full credit for up to 3 assignments.

If you need to turn in an assignment more than 7 days late, please contact me via inbox so we can discuss your options.

Grading Policy

Visit the “Grades” in Canvas to keep track of your grades. I typically grade once a week and post grades and comments on the online Canvas gradebook.

Grades will be assigned as follows:

A

90%

B

80%

C

70%

D

60%

If taking Pass/No Pass you need at least 70% of the total class points and complete the

midterm exam and the final exam to pass the class.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:
SRJC Writing Center Lessons on avoiding plagiarism
SRJC's policy on Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity:

All written work is to be original; plagiarism of any kind will result in a failing grade on that assignment. Students who plagiarize or cheat may be suspended – for one or two class meetings by the instructor – and referred to the Conduct Dean for discipline sanction, in cases of egregious violation. Please see Policy 3.11 for Academic Integrity .

Special Needs

Students with disabilities who believe they need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disability Resources (527-4278), as soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion.

Schedule

If any changes are made to the class schedule during the semester, I will update this Schedule and post an Instructor Announcement on Canvas.
