Course Syllabus

Course Description

An introduction to the musics of Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, Oceania, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, focusing on the interconnectedness and cross-fertilization between cultures. This course is AA degree applicable, CSU and UC transferable, and satisfies requirements for majors in Global Studies, Humanities, and Humanities and Fine Arts.

Student Learning Outcomes

Our goals in the course are:

  1. To gain an understanding of the methods, themes, values, and history of ethnomusicology as a field of study.
  2. To be able to recognize, locate, and explain the cultural, chronological, and geographical contexts of world musics.
  3. To apply music terminology to describe, document, compare and contrast stylistic elements of musical phenomena.

Exams

IMPORTANT: Both exams — MIDTERM and FINAL — must be taken to pass this course. You can take each online exam (called "Quizzes" in Canvas) three times to earn your highest score.  Please know that these exams, for which all possible multiple choice questions are available to you prior to the exam, constitute only 25% of your grade. If you complete all assignments, you will already have earned a "C" or better for the course.

Grading Policy

This class uses criterion-referenced assessment in which all students are expected to succeed.

Any assignment submitted after midnight on the due date will appear as zero points in the Gradebook until completed satisfactorily.
An assignment that is incomplete when submitted will earn 1 point until completed. Any assignment may be resubmitted with changes to complete that assignment for full credit. All assignments will be submitted through Canvas.

There are no penalties for late assignments. All assignments, except for the Final Exam ONLINE, will become unavailable for submission on Friday, December 13, 2024 at 11:59pm. The Final Exam ONLINE will be available from Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 12:00am to Friday, December 20, 2024 at 11:59pm at which time the Final Exam ONLINE will become unavailable.

Dropping the Class

If you decide not to complete this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it. Please speak with me if you are considering dropping the class. Yes, s**t happens, but I am ready to help you "hang in" and get over the finish line. 

Pass‐NoPass (P/NP)

You may take this class P/NP. With a grade of "C" or better, you will earn a "P." You must file for the P/NP option by 11:59 PM Friday, December 13, 2024. Once you opt for P/NP you cannot change back to a letter grade unless your Petition for Waiver of College Regulations is approved.
