Lecture: The Neoclassical School, Marsalis (31:35)
The word “neoclassical” can be interpreted two ways when referring to jazz. When Wynton Marsalis brought forward the Neoclassical School in the early 1990’s with his Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra, the result was music that copied historic jazz performers, like Armstrong and Ellington, as closely as possible. In its broader meaning, “neoclassical” usually refers to art forms that use elements from the past to create a new style of art.
