Jazz was born in New Orleans. The marching bands set the instrumental structure for jazz to follow. You should know the instrumentation of these bands, and the roles the various instruments played. Remember the early pioneers of jazz: Bolden, Bechet, Oliver, Morton, and above all, Armstrong.
