Purpose
The purpose of this learning activity is for you apply the SARA problem solving model and Crime Triangle model to real-world problems that might be found in any city or county in California. You will earn 10 points for completing this activity.
Instructions
Based on the community problem described below, analyze the problem (identify "how" and "why" the problem is happening), develop a response that solves the problem (prevents the problem from happening again), and describe how you would assess your results. For your response, consider the crime triangle and focus on the victim and environment. Think creatively and consider the root cause of the problem.
Scenario:
Vehicle thefts at the West Village Apartments complex have increased notably in the last year. 15 vehicles have been stolen from the parking lot at this complex. The complex is located within 1/4 mile of a major freeway on ramp. 5 of the victims said their cars were unlocked when taken. Word of the thefts has spread throughout the 200 apartment units and the complex owners are asking for help as 19 people gave notice that they are moving because of the growing crime problem.
You are one of the patrol officer assigned to the beat where this apartment complex is located. The chief has assigned you to develop a response plan to solve this crime problem.
Remember, adding more police, extra patrols, and hiring private security does nothing to solve the problem. We will assume that enforcement of existing laws and regular patrol activity around the problem will continue.
