Rules

In this module, we're going to brush up on the rules specific to colligate volleyball. At every level of the sport, the rules are different. So, it is critical to understand the defined rules for the level you're playing at. For example, the number of substitutions is different at every level. In high school it's 18, college is 15 and professional is 6. Is it totally obnoxious that each level has different rules? Yes. But, that discussion is for another day. Let's first start with the volleyball court itself.

Check out this video over basic rules:

Next, let's look at the grit of the court.

  • Court Dimensions:
    • Start by examining, Download Women's Volleyball Court Specifications. For clarification, volleyball is an international sport and is measured in meters (only the US uses feet/yards) 1m = 3.28ft.
    • The length of the entire court is 18m (59.05ft, or commonly rounded up to 60ft) and is divided evenly with the centerline.
    • The width of the court is 9m (29.53ft, or commonly rounded up to 30ft).
    • This makes one side of the court 9m by 9m (or 30ft by 30ft).
    • There is a specific line that goes across the court at the 3m mark, this is commonly referred to as the 10ft line (even though it's technically 9.84ft).

  • Court Accessories:
    • The most obvious, the net, is 1m (39in) in width and extends 9.5m (31ft, 2in) across the centerline of the court. The height of the net is 2.24m (7ft, 4 1/8in). It is affixed by two uprights, the poles, that act as tensioning devices.
    • Next are the antennas, 1.8m (6ft), and are placed on the net at the center line and perpendicular to the sideline.
    • Padding is required on the poles and the front and sides of the reffing stand. If this is not provided, the match cannot be played at the site.

  • The Ball:

    • Must be between 65cm - 67cm in circumference (25.6in - 26.4in) and shall weigh between 260g - 280g (9-10oz)
    • The ball must be made with leather or leather-like cover, using 12 or more panels and a separate bladder on the inside. It must be at least 1/3 of the surface in white or a white-like color.
    • The pressure of the ball must be between .3 - .325kilograms/square (4.3 - 4.6 lbs/square inch).
