Student TechConnect Zoom Information
During this course, your instructor may may use TechConnect Zoom to conduct synchronous class meetings, small group sessions and hold office hours. Zoom is a web-conferencing app similar to Skype. It is free for all California community college students. For best results, you will need a computer or laptop with a microphone and speakers (headphones). If your instructor decides to use Zoom to hold class meetings, you will need to do the following to prepare.
Step 1: Download Launcher when Prompted
You will need to download a small launcher to the computer (device) the first time you sign into a Zoom meeting with your instructor. This may happen after you click on the the Zoom meeting link.
- If you've used Zoom before, you likely already have the launcher on the device you used.
- If you plan to use a mobile device, download the Zoom app from your device app store. Remember, you will not have full functionality in Zoom on a mobile device.
Step 2: Joining a Zoom meeting
- Join in Canvas --Inside Canvas, click on the Confer Zoom link in the course navigation bar to the left of your screen. You will see a list of Upcoming Events. When it is time for your class meeting, click on the "Join" button.
- Join from Invitation Linked in Canvas Calendar event, Email, or Announcement -- If your instructor sends or posts a Zoom meeting invitation, then you can click on the link to join the meeting.
Step 3: Using Zoom Controls
- Once in the Zoom meeting, there are a range of controls that can be used.
- Select the microphone icon in the bottom left hand corner of the Zoom meeting window to mute/unmute yourself.
- Select the video camera icon (next to the microphone icon) to turn your video on/off.
- See other participants' names by selecting the participants icon. Also, you can "raise your hand" and answer "yes/no" questions on the Participants list.
- Share content by selecting the green Share Screen icon.
- Post answers to questions by selecting the Chat icon.
Step 4: Audio & Video Set Up
- If your instructor needs to see and hear you, you will need to use a computer or laptop with speakers/headphone and microphone. If you use a mobile device (including Chromebooks), you may not have full functionality in Zoom.
- If your headphones or mic is not working, you will need to configure your audio and video.
- Click on the down arrow next to the microphone icon; then click on test speaker and microphone.
- Click on the down arrow next to the video icon; then select your camera (if you have one on that device).
- Test your internet connection and adjust your setting by launching a Zoom Test Meeting. Links to an external site.
