Week 3 Discussion

Purpose

Almost all students now are digital natives and have been using social media longer than any other generation. This, of course, is both an advantage and disadvantage. There are effects/reactions on:

• Social wellbeing (FOMO, social isolation, "false" relationships, jealousy, envy, unrealistic expectations)
• Emotional wellbeing (anxiety, depression, shaming, needing likes and peer approval, sacrificing real life friendships at the expense of online relationships)
• Academic wellbeing (distractions leading to unfinished assignments or lack of attention to detail, neglect of work, lack of sleep)
• Peer connection (shared sense of community and connection, relationships with family and friends, emotional support, feeling less alone)
• Spreading the word (announcements for events, opportunities, campus happenings, social and political causes)

Here are the questions to be answered in a video this week using the effects/reactions information above:

1. Share your best experience with social media and your worst - this could be your personal experience or those of a friend or family member
2. Do you believe your college or professional work has been sacrificed as the result of social media use? Have personal relationships been sacrificed?
3. How do you feel about AI technology improvements and the possibility of infiltrating social media?
4. Finally, in a perfect world, how would social media have a place in our society/community?
