Final Exam:

**NOTE: THIS EXAM WILL NOT BE TIMED.

1. You will use to submit this assignment to enhance originality.

2. Submit it just as you would with a homework assignment here on Canvas, you do NOT need to go to the turnitin site. 

3. This exam is similar to your homework assignments, just longer and more thorough. I expect a complete paragraph (5 sentences) for each question.

4. Be aware that quoting the textbook or videos for most of your paragraph will not earn full points. I want your own words and analysis, so do not merely repeat what the book or videos state. 

5. Make sure you answer every section of the question; do not submit partial answers, this will be considered incomplete.

6. Do NOT upload a file for this exam (turnitin doesn't recognize some file formats), write your work on a different program so you can save and edit as you go along, but when you are ready, please copy and paste into Canvas. 

7. Include the number of the question that you are answering so I can give you proper credit.

Answer the following questions:

5 points each (60 pts total):

1. What factors came together to create the Byzantine Empire’s seventh-century crises? How did the Byzantines prefer to handle their relations with their neighbors? How would you describe the nature of their foreign relations?

2. What were the conditions that existed in Arabia at the time that Islam emerged? Why did Mohammed’s new faith bring him into conflict with the leaders of Mecca?

3. Islam in South Asia: What are some of the challenges that Islam encountered as it expanded into India and South Asia? Why was Islam so successful in some areas while in others it was not able to gain many converts?

4. What accounts for the great variety of cultures in Africa? How did the people of Africa mix outside ideas with local traditions? Give some examples.

5. What were some of the major technological advances developed during the Tang and Song dynasties and what effects did they have on the culture of China? How did some of these developments eventually weaken the power of the imperial court in China?

6. Buddhism in East Asia: What made Buddhism an attractive religion in China and other parts of East Asia? How did Buddhism threaten or support traditional politics? What led to the eventual decline of Buddhism?

7. How was the position of Emperor of Japan different from the Emperor of China? What role did the land owners play in the governing of Japan? How did this lead to the rise of Samurai?

8. Even though the Mongols left a trail of death and destruction in their path, why is the period of Mongol rule often referred to as the Pax Mongolica? The Mongols were basically semi-nomadic warriors with no experience governing vast empires or urban centers, so how did they govern and administer more advanced and settled cultures?

9. Describe three major changes that occurred in as a result of the Black Death. How did such a devastating disease begin to erode the social order that existed before the outbreak of the disease? What role did nomadic conquerors play in the spread of the plague?

10. Why did the Renaissance happen first in Italy? How did it spread to other parts of Europe? How did the Renaissance change European perceptions of their own culture?

11. The Inca created an advanced and sophisticated culture in the Andes, what was the inherit weakness in their political system? How would the rapid expansion of the empire and the forced integration of neighboring societies create resentment and anger against the Inca?

12. The Ottoman, Mughal, and Safavid each had a "golden age" of prosperity and power, what common factors enable them to become so dominant? How was each empire unique? What were the relationships with each other?

Directions:

• There is no time limit but you must complete the assignment by the due date and you only have 1 attempt. 

• It would be best to complete your work in a different word program and then copy your work to Turnitin or upload a file.

• Your answers should include some information from the text, videos, and documents--but the whole paragraph should be your ideas and analysis, NOT just quotes from the book and videos.

• Each answer should be at least a paragraph long (5 well-developed sentences), similar to what you have been doing in your homework assignments.

• You must do your own work. You are NOT allowed to copy someone else's answers or to just copy and paste material from the internet, that is plagiarism! If you do, you will receive a zero for the exam
