Students will use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, submitting assignments, accessing resources, and viewing grades. The instructor will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as the instructor creates an Announcement. It is the student's responsibility to check Canvas regularly.

Bookstore

You can locate and order course textbooks online via the SRJC Bookstore. Note that if you want to pick your books up in Petaluma, you need to order them from the Petaluma Bookstore website.

You need to purchase:

    • Splash Goggles
    • Rubber Apron
    • Spring 2024 Chem3AL Lab Manual
    • Laboratory Notebook with copy pages

Attendance

Start of Semester: Students who do not attend the first class, or log-in to the Canvas Course by the end of the first week of the of the semester may be dropped from the class. If you miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row you may be dropped from the class.

Laboratory sessions: Tardy arrivals will be penalized at -0.5 points every 5 minutes. After 15 minutes, you may not be allowed into lab. Lab ends promptly at the scheduled time and you must exit the laboratory for it to be cleaned and prep'd for the next lab. It is your responsibility to manage your time. If you leave a mess at your station, a point deduction of up to 3 points will be assessed to your lab report score.

Absences: If you need to miss a lab meeting please notify me ASAP. Missing more than 3 Labs without prior communication may result in being dropped from the course.

Emergencies do happen, your lowest lab score will be dropped to allow for one emergency absence.

Late Policy

All assignments are due at the time specified on the due date. Late submissions will be deducted 1 point every 12 hours. Submissions more than one week late are not accepted without prior arrangement.

Grades

A typical Lab will have 3 portions. The pre-lab, the lab, and the report. Your pre-lab typically accounts for 25%, the lab performance and data typically count for 25% and your report with your calculations and post-lab analysis typically counts for 50%. A lab report that is missing any portion of the assignment will be considered incomplete and result in a 0 grade. Your lowest lab score will be dropped at the end of the semester.

100-89.5 % A , 89.4 - 79.5 % B, 79.4 - 69.5 % C, 69.4%-59.0% D

If taking Pass/No Pass you need at least 70% to pass the class.

Special Needs

Students with disabilities who believe they need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disability Resources (527-4278), as soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Those requiring accommodations through DRD, please notify your instructor as soon as possible.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:

Dropping the Class and P/NP

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it to avoid getting no refund (after 10% of course length), a W symbol (after 20%), or a grade (after 60%). Also, for several consecutive, unexplained absences, the instructor may drop a student.

You may take this class P/NP. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online with TLC or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. With a grade of C or better, you will get P. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade.

Physical and Mental Health

Should you experience any physical or mental health issues, know that all of us at SRJC care about your well-being. SRJC’s Student Health Services (SHS) has nurse practitioners and mental health therapists available. Confidential sessions are provided via secure Zoom or in-person. Sessions are free for SRJC students taking credit or non-credit classes, and some providers can converse with you in Spanish if you prefer. SHS also has on-site covid rapid testing and vaccinations available also at no cost.
