If wildfires burned in areas far away from homes, they would be less concerning.  Here in Sonoma County, many people live in the wildland-urban interface, which means that when wildlands burn, adjacent urban areas are at risk.  In this quiz, you will learn about the growth of the wildland-urban interface (WUI), and explore the location of your own home relative to the WUI.

Growth of the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI)

The WUI is the zone of transition between unoccupied land and human development. It is the line, area or zone where structures and other human development meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels.

Read this Science Daily summary of a research article, As wildland-urban interface grows, so does risk to people and habitats  .  You will use some information in this article to answer some of the quiz questions.  Note, locally, one third of Sonoma County's residents live in the WUI.  You will find some other resources on the WUI as you move through the quiz.
