The Paris Climate Agreement

COP stands for Conference of the Parties, and is a summit  attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a treaty that came into force in 1994

In 2015, 196 nations, including the United States, met in Paris (COP21) and signed a legally binding international treaty on climate change: the Paris Climate Agreement, with a goal of limiting global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

Here is a brief video that outlines the basics of the Paris Climate Agreement.  There will be questions in the quiz from the video.

Conference of the Parties 28

COP28 is the 28th annual United Nations climate change conference.

Based on this information, the COP assesses the effects of the measures taken by Parties and the progress made in achieving the ultimate objective of the Convention.” Conference of the Parties (COP) | UNFCCC

This year’s COP is the 28th annual conference (hence the name COP28) and is being held right now (November 30-December 12, 2023) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  Information about this conference can be found here:COP28
