Attendance Policy – Póliza de Asistencia

To pass the class and receive credit for this course toward your certificate, you must earn AT LEAST 40 hours (or more) of course attendance. Attendance for any given week (worth 6 hours) includes attending the Zoom class sessions AND completion of any/all required work for the week. Failure to complete 40 hours or more will result in a non-passing (NP) grade and having to retake the class if you want to apply for an Adult Education Certificate.

Course Description – Descripción del Curso

Overview of the construction industry, the building design process, construction project process, and roles and responsibilities of those involved, clients, architects, engineers, contractors, project managers, technicians, sub-contractors, workers, suppliers, regulatory agencies, bankers, lawyers, and the public. Includes overview and career opportunities.

Visión general de la industria de la construcción, el proceso de diseño de edificios, el proceso del proyecto de construcción y los roles y responsabilidades de los involucrados: clientes, arquitectos, ingenieros, contratistas, gerentes de proyectos, técnicos, subcontratistas, trabajadores, proveedores, agencias reguladoras, banqueros, abogados y el público. Incluye visión general y oportunidades profesionales.

Course Objectives – Objetivos del Curso

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify roles, crafts, and trades of individuals working in the construction industry
  2. Examine the building design process
  3. Analyze the construction planning process
  4. Identify participants in the construction planning process, and analyze and compare their roles and responsibilities
  5. Apply a problem-solving process to common problems encountered in a construction project
  6. Identify possible career opportunities within the industry

Al finalizar el curso, los estudiantes podrán:

  1. Identificar roles, artesanías y oficios de personas que trabajan en la industria de la construcción
  2. Examinar el proceso de diseño de edificios
  3. Analizar el proceso de planificación de la construcción
  4. Identificar a los participantes en el proceso de planificación de la construcción, y analizar y comparar sus funciones y responsabilidades
  5. Aplicar un proceso de resolución a problemas comunes encontrados en un proyecto de construcción
  6. Identificar posibles oportunidades profesionales dentro de la industria

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Classify basic work tasks into particular crafts or trades.
  2. Identify trade(s) that meet the student's skills, aptitudes, and physical abilities.
  3. Develop a basic resume and interviewing skills.
  4. Perform effective job searching networking, outreach services, and through trade unions.

 

Al final de este curso, el estudiante debe ser capaz de:

  1. Clasificar las tareas básicas de trabajo en oficios u oficios particulares.
  2. Identifique los oficios que cumplan con las habilidades, aptitudes y habilidades físicas del estudiante.

Netiquette, or Why Is It Harder to Be Polite Online?

Netiquette refers to using common courtesy in online communication. All members of the class are expected to follow netiquette in all course communications. Use these guidelines:

  • Use capital letters sparingly. THEY LOOK LIKE SHOUTING.
  • Forward emails only with a writer's permission.
  • Be considerate of others' feelings and use language carefully.
  • Cite all quotations, references, and sources (otherwise, it is plagiarism).
  • Use humor carefully. It is hard to "read" tone; sometimes humor can be misread as criticism or personal attack. Feel free to use emoticons like :) for a smiley face to let others know you are being humorous.
  • Use complete sentences and standard English grammar to compose posts. Write in proper paragraphs. Review work before submitting it.
  • Text speak, such as "ur" for "your" or "ru" for "are you" etc., is only acceptable when texting.
