Students will use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, submitting assignments, accessing resources, and viewing grades. The instructor will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as the instructor creates an Announcement. A “Q&A Forum” is also on Canvas to ask for assistance of your classmates or of instructor. It is the student's responsibility to check Canvas regularly.

Bookstore

You can locate and order course textbooks online via the SRJC Bookstore. Note that if you want to pick your books up in Petaluma, you need to order them from the Petaluma Bookstore website.

You need to purchase:

Splash Goggles

Rubber Apron

Fall2021 Chem3AL Lab Manual

Laboratory Notebook with Carbon Pages

Attendance

Start of Semester: Students who do not log-in to the Canvas Course by Thursday of the first week of the of the semester will be dropped from the class. If you miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row you may be dropped from the class.

Laboratory sessions are 8:40 am-11:40am on Tuesday at the Santa Rosa Campus. Tardy arrivals will be penalized at -0.5 points every 5 minutes. After 10 minutes, you will not be allowed into lab. Lab ends promptly at 11:40 and you must exit the laboratory for it to be cleaned and prep'd for the next lab. It is your responsibility to manage your time. If you leave a mess at your station, a point deduction of up to 3 points will be assessed to your lab report score.

If you need to miss a face-to-face meeting please notify me ASAP. Without prior notification or doctor note, you may be dropped from the course or given an automatic failure for the course. Missing more than 2 Labs without prior communication will result in being dropped from the course.

Late Policy

All assignments are due at the time specified on the due date. Late submissions will be deducted 1 point every 12 hours. Submissions more than one week late are not accepted without prior arrangement.

Grades

A typical Lab will have 3 portions. The pre-lab, the lab, and the report. Your pre-lab typically accounts for 25%, the lab performance and data typically count for 25% and your report with your calculations and post-lab analysis typically counts for 50%. A lab report that is missing any portion of the assignment will be considered incomplete and result in a 0 grade.

100-88.5 % A , 88.4 - 78.5 % B, 78.4 - 68.5 % C, 68.4%-58.0% D

If taking Pass/No Pass you need at least 70% to pass the class.

Special Needs

Students with disabilities who believe they need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disability Resources (527-4278), as soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Those requiring accommodations through DRD, please notify your instructor as soon as possible.

With the COVID-19 emergency status of this course, videos and files may be severely delayed in ADA accommodations. If you rely on captions or screen readers for any reason, please let me know so I can work with you directly to ensure your academic success in this course.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.Links to an external site.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:

SRJC's policy on Academic Integrity (Links to an external site.)

Dropping the Class and P/NP

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it to avoid getting no refund (after 10% of course length), a W symbol (after 20%), or a grade (after 60%). Also, for several consecutive, unexplained absences, the instructor may drop a student.

You may take this class P/NP. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online with TLC or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. With a grade of C or better, you will get P. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

Should you experience any physical or mental health issues, know that all of us at SRJC care about your well-being. SRJC’s Student Health Services (SHS) has nurse practitioners and mental health therapists available. Confidential sessions are provided via secure Zoom or in-person. Sessions are free for SRJC students taking credit or non-credit classes, and some providers can converse with you in Spanish if you prefer. COVID-19 Student Protocols

Presence on Campus

Officially, all Sonoma County Junior College District sites are closed to the public. Students are only permitted to attend class and are expected to leave campus afterwards. No loitering, studying, or eating on campus is permitted before or after class, except in designated areas.

Arrival at Campus

When arriving at SRJC, please park in designated areas that are closest to your building. There are no parking permits required to park on campus for Fall 2021.

Mandatory Masking

Students MUST wear a face mask at all times when indoors at a District facility. Disposable surgical masks will provided by SRJC to ensure face covering is of appropriate quality - if needed. If you require a medically necessary accommodation, please contact the Director of Student Health Services, Rebecca Norwick at rnorwick@santarosa.edu.

Symptom Self-Survey

Prior to coming to a District site, each student must complete an honest symptom self-check. If symptoms or potential exposure is noted, contact your instructor and Student Health Services at (707) 527-4445.

Approaching and Entering the Building Area

Signs and barriers will direct students to the entrance of the building area. Please follow these directions and DO NOT enter the building area through other routes or doors as they will be locked. Please wear a mask as you approach the entrance to the building area. A SRJC Safety Monitor will be in the building area and will have surgical masks available to replace any inappropriate face coverings (e.g., neck gaiters, poor fitting, etc.)

Using the MySRJC App, students will need to check-in to every building they enter using the posted QR code. If students do not have a smart device, the Safety Monitor will record the students’ name. This information is used only to notify students in the event of a positive COVID-19 incident.

After scanning the QR code, please wait until the classroom is opened by the instructor.

Entering the Classroom or Lab

Hand Sanitizer Station: Upon entering the building, please dispense sanitizer into the palm of each hand and rub sanitizer until it is completely dry.

Mandatory Masking: Students must already be wearing a mask upon entry. Please confirm your mask is correctly covering your mouth and nose prior to entering the classroom (see attached document on how to correctly wear a mask).

Storing your Personal Belonging for lab: Please bring a minimal number of personal items into the lab. Your instructor will give you instructions on where to place items.

Assigned Laboratory Workstation for lab: Upon entering the laboratory, you will be assigned a station. This will be your lab station for the entire semester. Your lab station will be equipped with all the items you need for the lab to limit movement in class. You will also be assigned a locker right next to your lab station that will contain glassware and other equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for labs: Your instructor will advise you when and what specific PPE to wear for your lab class such as goggles, apron, and/or gloves, in addition to your mask.
