Student Learning Outcomes:

Italian 2 students will continue to learn what was begun in Italian 1:

1. Speak in comprehensible Italian

2. Comprehend simple spoken questions in Italian

3. Ask and answer simple informational questions in Italian

4. Make simple statements in the present tense in Italian. In Italian 2 the passato prossimo and the imperfetto will be studied

5. Recognize and follow basic instructions and directions in Italian. We will study the command forms (the imperative).

6. Communicate basic impressions about the differences between American and Italian cultures

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Understand and form simple sentences in the present or past tenses (passato prossimo and imperfetto) of regular verbs and the most common irregular verbs, and understand and use the imperative forms of Lei and tu.

2. Have command of everyday vocabulary words related to home, weather, health,

family members and some shopping experiences such as purchasing a coffee.

3. Recognize and use direct and indirect object pronouns, the double pronouns, and ci and ne, in conversation and writing.

4. Read simple texts in Italian.

To meet these objectives here is what is expected of you:

1. Come to class every day. You are responsible for the work assigned whether or not you come to class. Please let me know if you have to miss class. Quizzes cannot be made up unless you've arranged with me in advance, are sick, or unless there is a true emergency. You are allowed three (3) unexcused absences for the semester before it affects your grade. (See details under listing of objective methods of evaluation.) Students missing four (4) or more classes during the first eight (8) weeks of class will receive an "unsatisfactory" midterm progress report and may be dropped from the roster at my discretion. See below for a list of excused absences.

In some cases an absence will be excused. Excused absences will not count against you. An excused absence means that you missed class due to circumstances beyond your control. Please let me know by e-mail as soon as you can, explaining your circumstances, if you have to miss class. Excused absences include: illness or flu where you are contagious, hospitalization due to serious illness or accident, serious illness or injury that requires a doctor's care and/or recommendation that you not attend class, serious illness to a very close friend or immediate family member that requires your attendance to that person's needs, medical appointments if you can demonstrate that there are no alternate times available, family emergencies that can include serious illness or death of an immediate family member, serious illness or death of a close friend, criminal or traffic court appearances if you are found not guilty, unanticipated delay or cancellation of commercial transportation, car breakdown.

2. You need to plan to study Italian outside the classroom at least 6-10 hours a week. That translates as at least 1-2 hours outside the classroom every day. This includes online activities.

3. Please hand in all written homework on the date requested. Late homework will be accepted, but the fact that it is late will be noted.

4. Homework should be handwritten, not typed.

Tips for studying:

1. Practice out loud every day. If you study Italian 15-20 minutes a day, 7 days a week, that is better than 140 minutes in one day. It is like building muscles or practicing a musical intrument. Even 5 minutes a day is better than nothing.

2. Practice speaking to anything or anybody nearby: yourself, your cat, your dog, your imaginary friend. After we've corrected the exercises, read them aloud.

3. Write your homework by hand rather than typing it (online homework is an exception).

4. If you write me e-mails in italiano I will answer you in italiano. Your own private penpal.

5. Listen to and watch Italian: Italian songs, Italian radio, Italian movies, Italian television, Italian videos.

HOW TO GET A GOOD GRADE:

1. Come to class every day.

2. Don't miss quizzes without letting me know. A missed quiz without checking in with me is an F.

3. Do all the homework and hand it in on time.

4. Read my corrections; ask if you don't understand.

5. Ask me questions if you need help or don't understand something. Stay in touch.

6. Do your best! Attitude is everything.

7. Do well on the quizzes.

8. NO USE OF CELL PHONES OR DEVICES WITHOUT CHECKING WITH THE INSTRUCTOR!

9. Rude or otherwise disruptive behavior such as talking during class will not be tolerated.

10. No PDA (public display of affection) is allowed in class, including on Zoom.

11. No cheating is allowed (cheating is defined as copying another person's work on an assignment or exam, using information from the Internet, books or magazines without identifying them as a source, having another student, friend, grandmother, acquaintance, etc., write an assignment for you).

12. On Zoom meetings please dress as you would for an in-classroom class.

Summary of how to get a good grade:

Come to class every day, do your best on your homework, hand it in on time, stay in touch with me if you have questions or problems, NO DEVICES in class without permission, demonstrate that you want to learn. Attitude is everything.

Please familiarize yourself with the Junior College's Student Conduct Standards and Due Process.

Objective methods of evaluation/basis of grade:

Written and online homework: 35%

Work handed in online, including Canvas and MindTap assignments.

Attendance and class participation: 30%

Let your instructor know when you will be absent.

Quizzes: 20%

Oral presentations throughout the semester: 5%

Final Exam: 10%

In addition, the curve your work takes during the semester (up or down) will also affect your grade, especially if you are between two grades. For example, if you start with an A and get an F on the final exam, the F will have more weight than the A, and vice versa if you start with an F and get an A on the final.
