JAPAN 2, Elementary Japanese, Part 2
Section 4715, Spring 2022.
Course Description
A high-beginning/low intermediate communication course designed to improve those listening, speaking and writing skills needed for cross cultural understanding in social, academic and work-related situations.
Student Learning Outcomes
1. Engage in level appropriate conversations about past, present and future activities with acceptable degree of spontaneity.
2. Be familiar with Japanese language and culture.
3. Expand and comprehend ideas, questions, instructions and requests in Japanese.
4. Construct and organize comprehensible written sentences, paragraphs and brief compositions using accurate Japanese syntax and cohesive elements.
5. Foster curiosity, inquiry, and lifelong interest in, and enjoyment of, Japanese language learning.
Class Meetings
Mondays and Wednesdays, 4 - 6 p.m. via Zoom, 1/19 - 5/18and Final Exam on 5/23 and 5/25.
No class February 21 (President's Day), March 21 and 23 (Spring Break).

Students will use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, submitting assignments, viewing corrections and comments on assignments, sharing resources, and viewing grades.

These are the same books as we used in Japan 1. If you do not have these books already, you can locate and order textbooks online via the SRJC Bookstore. Note that if you want to pick your books up in Petaluma, you need to order them from the Petaluma Bookstore website.
Suggested Software/Application
You may want to use the following software or any other method you are comfortable in submitting your homework assignment, etc.
- Adobe Scan (Capture any paper document and transform it into a high-quality PDF with text you can search)
- This application is free and will help you to create and upload a PDF doc. of all the homework.
- 1. In the Google Play or App Store download "Adobe Scan"
- 2. Sign in using your SRJC email.
- 3. You will be redirected to sign in using your SRJC student ID number on the SRJC Portal Login page.
- 4. Once you are logged in - you can use the App on your phone. The app takes pictures, automatically crops the photos and lets you edit them prior to making a PDF.
- 5. Once you have taken a photo - you can email the link to yourself, then download the document to your computer for use.

Last Day to Drop without W: February 6
Last Day to Opt for P/NP: February 27
Last Day to Drop with W: April 24
Day Class Ends: Wednesday, May 18
Final Examination; Monday, May 23 and Wednesday, May 25 (You will be assigned a time slot on these days)
Dropping the Class
If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it to avoid getting no refund (after 10% of course length), a W symbol (after 20%), or a grade (after 60%). Also, for several consecutive, unexplained absences, the instructor may drop a student. It is important to communicate with the instructor.
Pass‐NoPass (P/NP)
You may take this class P/NP. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online with TLC or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. With a grade of C or better, you will get P.
You must file for the P/NP option by February 27. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade. If you are taking this course as part of a certificate program, you can probably still take the class P/NP. Check with a counselor to be sure.
Instructor Announcements and Q&A Forum
The instructor will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as the instructor creates an Announcement. A “Q&A Forum” is also on Canvas to ask for assistance of your classmates or of instructor.
Attendance
Attending every class (both hours) is an essential element for this course and important for your overall success in mastering what is covered during the class. Please make every effort to log-in on time and be ready for the class. I ask you to have the video camera on as much as possible.
It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class in a row that you contact me to avoid falling behind or being dropped from the class.
In addition, attending the scheduled brief one-on-one session (once a month) is highly recommended for you to practice listening, speaking and conversation skills with the instructor. Extra credit' is awarded for attending.
Students who do not log-in to the first class without previous communication may be dropped from the class after the second day of the semester. Please communicate with me if you need to miss the first class meeting.
Class Participation
You are expected to proactively engage in the class and the breakout sessions. They offer much needed review of the lessons as well as opportunities for speaking and listening [ractice.
Zoom Class Etiquette
*Inform your family members and others that you are in the class.
*At the beginning and at the end of the class , turn on the video camera to properly begin and end the class as well as when requested by the instructor. It is highly desirable that you have the camera on throughout the class.
*During the breakout sessions turn on the video to have meaningful session with your classmates.
*Mute yourself to keep the background sound/noise to minimum.
*Unmute yourself when it is your turn to speak, or asking questions.
*Other etiquette includes refraining from: eating, talking with others, multitasking, playing with pets. In other words, I want your full attention and participation during the class. Let's make the most of our class time together!
Late Policy
All assignments are due in Canvas on the specified due date/time. Monday assignments are due on Saturday that week (+ one week for my review and your revision). Wednesday assignments are due on the following Monday + one week for my review and your revision).
After receiving my corrections oe comments, you may make necessary changes and re-submit for a revised grade.
This class will move quite quickly and your mastery of new concepts, grammar, vocabulary, kanji, etc. that are introduced in each class lay the foundation for each progressive step. Therefore, it is essential that you stay current on your assignments. For this reason a late submission is only accepted by the specified dates. Submissions after the closing date are not accepted without prior arrangement.
No homework will be accepted via email. If any homework is missed, zero point will be recorded.
Exams
There will be online chapter review tests and final exam. The material comes from the textbook, workbook, class lectures and supplemental materials. If any exam is missed, a zero will be recorded as the score. It is your responsibility to take the online test/exam by the due date/time.
I regard the chapter review tests as an important learning tool. So, it is recommended that you review the returned exam, make corrections if needed, and re-submit for a revised grade(points). This must be done within specified time period.
Grading Policy
I grade once a week and post points and comments on the online Canvas gradebook. It is most effective for you to review the returned assignments and learn from what ou missed.
Grades will be assigned as follows:
If taking Pass/No Pass you need at least 70% of the total class points and complete the final exam to pass the class.

Standards of Conduct
Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.
Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:

Avoid Plagiarism Like the, er, Plague
Although most students have likely heard about plagiarism during their years of schooling, it still is prevalent-even in higher education.

Netiquette, or Why Is It Harder to Be Polite Online?
Netiquette refers to using common courtesy in online communication. All members of the class are expected to follow netiquette in all course communications. Use these guidelines:
- Use capital letters sparingly. THEY LOOK LIKE SHOUTING.
- Forward emails only with a writer's permission.
- Be considerate of others' feelings and use language carefully.
- Cite all quotations, references, and sources (otherwise, it is plagiarism).
- Use humor carefully. It is hard to "read" tone; sometimes humor can be misread as criticism or personal attack. Feel free to use emoticons like :) for a smiley face to let others know you are being humorous.
- Use complete sentences and standard English grammar to compose posts. Write in proper paragraphs. Review work before submitting it.
- Text speak, such as "ur" for "your" or "ru" for "are you" etc., is only acceptable when texting.
