Course Description

Beginning-High Non-Credit English as a Second Language is for non-native speakers of English. We will practice listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar skills to help you use English in school, work, family, and social situations.  We will talk about topics such as personal information, school, family, work, and community.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, you will be able to:

      • Use reading and writing skills to be independent in daily situations.
      • Use level-appropriate listening and speaking skills needed to communicate in a variety of settings at school, work, and in the community.
      • Demonstrate appropriate cross-cultural skills in interactions at work, school, and in the community.
      • Use appropriate study skills needed in academic environments.

There will be live Zoom classes twice a week

Course Web Site

Students will use the Canvas course website for assignment instructions and course lessons.  You can turn in homework on Canvas or e-mail or on your phone through Remind.

You can locate and order textbooks online via the SRJC Bookstore. Note that if you want to pick your books up in Petaluma, you need to order them from the Petaluma Bookstore website.  Or you can call and pay for your books and then pick them up or have them shipped to your house. The phone number is 707-778-3902. You will need a discount code from your teacher before ordering.

 

Materials

      • Computer: It is best to use a computer or iPad or tablet for this class. You can borrow one from the Southwest Center. Please call 707-527-4229. You can also borrow a computer and receive free WiFi (hot spot) from the local library.       • Lined Paper: 8.5" X 11"
      • Pencil/ Eraser/ Sharpener
      • Dictionary: Please have a dictionary with your native language and English. You can use Google Translate by downloading the app to your phone or using it on the computer. Class Begins: Tuesday, August 18

Class Ends: Thursday, December 10

Holiday/No School: Thursday, November 26

 

Attendance

Come to class every day and on time. Regular attendance is very important to learn English. If you miss a class, you must call a classmate and get the notes from the class and the homework assignment for the next class. If you miss three consecutive classes without contacting the teacher, you may be dropped from the class.

 

Participation

Raise your hand to ask a question and listen to your classmates when they talk. Try your best. Mistakes are part of learning!

 

Grading Policy

Grades are based on:

      • Attendance and participation in class
      • Homework (you get points for turning in homework even if the answers are incorrect)
      • Quizzes & Final Exam (there are 3-4 quizzes and a final exam)

Grades for writing assignments and quizzes are based on the following:

A

90-100%

B

        80-89%

C

        70-79%

D

        60-69%

Final Grade: This class is Pass/No Pass.  You need at least 70% of the total class points and to complete the final exam to pass the class.

 

Class Rules

      • Speak English while in class. Take time to practice English outside of class.
      • Support your classmates, even when they make mistakes.
      • Turn off the ringer on your cell phone and DO NOT text or make phone calls during class.
      • Do not talk while someone else is speaking.
      • Be punctual and come to class every day. If you have to come late, please enter the class quietly.
      • Help your classmates.
      • Respect your classmates.

  • Be kind and respectful to others.
  • Use complete sentences.
  • Use language that supports others.
