English 5: Advanced Composition and Critical Thinking

Welcome to English 5! This class is designed to help you strengthen your analytical and argumentative writing skills and deepen your understanding of the principles of critical thinking. Specifically, you will:

  • Learn how to unpack the structure of arguments, examine the validity and soundness of arguments, and identify manipulations of rhetoric;

  • Apply these analytical skills to understanding a wide variety of texts, media, and everyday experiences – from tweets to advertisements, popular culture to critical essays, and formal speeches to everyday ways of talking;

  • Become a more persuasive and effective writer who can critically analyze others’ arguments and build your own powerful arguments about topics that matter to you.
