It is generally assumed that urban populations are healthier, more literate and more prosperous than rural populations. Approximately half the world's population - 3.5 billion people -- lives in urban areas, among them, almost one billion are desperately poor and live in slums without even the most basic services such as sanitation and water. In 1950, only 29 percent of people lived in urban areas, but by 2050, 66 percent will live in cities. The trend towards urban living is particularly acute in developing countries.
In Latin America, the urban population will increase from 42 per cent in 1950 to an expected 90 percent by 2050. The rapid urbanization goes hand-in-hand with even faster development of shanty towns, favelas or barrios in all cities in the region. 30 percent of the urban population lack adequate water. Those without adequate sanitation number as many 40 percent of the urban population.
Many of the "megacities" in Latin America face significant air pollution and are among the most congested cities in the World. In 2018, of the 50 cities in the World with the highest murder rate, 42 were in Latin America, including number 1, Tijuana, Mexico.
Despite these statistics, Latin American countries are working hard to address the issues with mixed success. Please watch this video about the Favelas of Brazil.
