Laboratory Course Syllabus

*modified 9/23

Course Description

General principles of chemistry, including atomic theory, bonding, stoichiometry, kinetic molecular theory of gases, properties of mixtures, the periodic table, and thermochemistry. Emphasis will be placed n laboratory experiments that illustrate the fundamental principles and laws of chemical behavior and the properties of matter. Lab portion of the first semester of a one-year program of general chemistry.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1.  Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental chemistry laboratory techniques.
2.  Carry out experiments safely and carefully in the lab.
3.  Obtain accurate data and interpret and manipulate the data correctly.
4.  Relate experimental observation in the lab to theoretical chemical concepts from the lecture.

Class Meetings

This Lab and Lab Lecture will have 5 Face-to-Face meetings. All other forms of contact will be run asynchronously. Any synchronous online contact will be optional.

Course Materials

Canvas

Canvas logo.jpg

Students will use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, submitting assignments, viewing classmate's work, sharing resources, and viewing grades. The instructor will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as soon as the instructor creates an Announcement. A “Q&A Forum” is also on Canvas to ask for assistance of your classmates or of instructor. It is the student's responsibility to check Canvas regularly.

Bookstore

You can locate and order course textbooks online via the SRJC Bookstore. Note that if you want to pick your books up in Petaluma, you need to order them from the Petaluma Bookstore website.

You need to purchase:

  • Splash Goggles
  • Rubber Apron

Attendance

Start of Semester: Students who do not log-in to the Canvas Course by Thursday of the first week of the of the semester will be dropped from the class. If you miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row you may be dropped from the class.

Because there are only a limited number of Face-to-Face meetings, missing any in-person labs may result in an automatic F for the course. If you fail to complete more than 2 Lab Modules, your grade may also result in an automatic F.

Please contact your instructor ASAP about any absences or missed deadlines.

Late Policy

All assignments are due at the time specified on the due date. Late submissions will be deducted 10% every day. Submissions more than one week late are not accepted without prior arrangement.

Grades

A typical Lab will have 3 portions. The pre-lab, the lab, and the report. Your pre-lab typically accounts for 25%, the lab performance and data typically count for 25% and your report with your calculations and post-lab analysis typically counts for 50%. A lab report that is missing any portion of the assignment will be considered incomplete and result in a 0 grade.

100-88.5 % A , 88.4 - 78.5 % B, 78.4 - 68.5 % C, 68.4%-58.0% D

Virtual Labs will follow a different format, see the individual lab for more details. If any portion of a Virtual Lab Module is not submitted, you may be awarded a 0 for the entire Lab Module.

If taking Pass/No Pass you need at least 70% to pass the class.

Special Needs

Students with disabilities who believe they need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disability Resources (527-4278), as soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Those requiring accommodations through DRD, please notify your instructor as soon as possible.

With the COVID-19 emergency status of this course, videos and files may be severely delayed in ADA accommodations. If you rely on captions or screen readers for any reason, please let me know so I can work with you directly to ensure your academic success in this course.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. I encourage students to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:

Dropping the Class and P/NP

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it to avoid getting no refund (after 10% of course length), a W symbol (after 20%), or a grade (after 60%). Also, for several consecutive, unexplained absences, the instructor may drop a student.

You may take this class P/NP. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online with TLC or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. With a grade of C or better, you will get P. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade.
