Choose one of the conflict scenarios listed here and then answer the 7 questions in the quiz. There is an example shown below as well using the Trader Joe's example.
Conflict scenario:
One of my classmates interrupts all the time. It drives me crazy. One day in class she interrupted me and so I yelled “Shut up!”. My instructor said I was being disruptive and I lost points for the day.
Conflict scenario:
I do not get along with one of my co-workers. He often says mean things about me to our other co-workers. It makes me not want to work with him but we are assigned to a lot of the same schedules.
Conflict scenario:
One of my friends does not like our classmate named Joe. I walked by Joe last week and hit him with my shoulder and gave him a dirty look. This is against the student code of conduct and I could get suspended from school.
Conflict scenario:
One of my classmates always changes the subject to talk about himself. It drives me crazy. As soon as he does it, I pull out my phone and start playing games and not listening. I am losing points in class and getting in trouble for always having my phone out.
Conflict scenario:
One of my co-workers does not like any of the things I like. We have to work on a project together and I don’t want to. I told my boss that I won’t work with someone who isn’t one of my friends. My boss says I have no choice if I want to keep my job.
Conflict scenario:
My classmate loves to discuss politics and I don’t. They are always asking me personal questions about political issues and I don’t want to talk about it. I usually put on my headphones and ignore them but they keep talking to me and it is making me so mad!
Conflict scenario:
I have not turned in any homework this semester. The semester will be over in 3 weeks and I am not passing my class. The instructor does not accept late work.
Conflict scenario:
I decided not to use my testing accommodations on my exam but then I failed my exam. Now I might not pass the class. I told my instructor that they are being totally unfair and that their class is stupid.
Conflict scenario:
I am on a date with someone and they suggest we go out to ice cream. I get sick if I eat ice cream but I don’t want to hurt their feelings.
Example of how to answer the questions:
Conflict (what happened):
Someone cut in line in front of me at trader joes.
How I responded:
I stayed there getting mad and then when I saw them in the parking lot I smashed my cart into their car as I walked by.
Was this response (circle one):
Passive
Aggressive
Assertive
Did you get the outcome you wanted? Why/why not?
No, because they still cut in front of me and it just made me madder and madder.
What were the consequences of this response?
I have to pay for damages to their car now. My insurance rates will go up.
What is a different response I could have tried? (How could you handle this differently?)
I could have said “excuse me, this is already a line. You’ll need to go back there.”
I could have just let it go and walked on by without smashing into their car.
If I had handled this differently, how could the outcome have changed?
I wouldn’t have been so mad if I had just pointed out the line to them. I wouldn’t have to deal with the insurance issues and price increases. I would have saved a lot of money and energy.
