This Online Public Speaking course includes instruction and practice in the various forms of public address and the techniques for orally presenting ideas clearly, concisely, and coherently. Students are required to meet synchronously during scheduled class times.  There will also be asynchronous assignments.  Students are required to outline speeches frequently; to read a college-level public speaking textbook and apply its principles in the preparation of their speeches; and to critically analyze public speeches of various types.

Text Book for this class will be a free online open source text.

Recommended Preparation: Eligibility for ENGL 1A.

Transferability: Speech 1A satisfies the oral communication requirement for transfer to any California State University. It is also IGETC transferable.

Student Learning Outcomes for Speech 1A

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:  

  • Effectively prepare and present public speeches to a live audience using contemporary technology.
  • Demonstrate active listening skills.  
  • Critically evaluate various forms of communication.  

Course Objectives: 

  • Identify the elements of a communication situation.  
  • Perform preliminary audience analysis.  
  • Selection of appropriate subject matter.  
  • Gather and select appropriate materials.  
  • Organize material into appropriate structural pattern for oral presentation.  
  • Encode thoughts into appropriate verbal and non-verbal transmissions.  
  • Practice by rehearsal the oral presentation of the speech.  
  • Present the speech to a live audience.  
  • Listen, evaluate, and critique oral presentations by other students.  
  • Incorporate and use of visual aids into an oral presentation.  
  • Overcome communication reticence.  
  • Recognize logical fallacies.  
  • Recognize emotional appeals.  
  • Recognize the influences of source credibility on message acceptance.  
  • To acquire a foundation of the basic terminology, concepts, and theories in communication.

Assignments & Methods of Evaluation: 

  • Oral presentations: 425 points

Each student will be required to give 6 speeches. Each of the speeches will focus on a different public speaking skill and will prepare the student for more complex speeches. The speeches, which will reveal the students ability to present a message orally in an organized well, supported manner.

  • Narrative Speech – 3 to 5 minutes - 50 points  
  • Demonstration Speech - 4 to 6 minutes - 100 points  
  • Informative Speech - 8 to 10 minutes - 100 points 
  • Persuasive Speech - 8 to 10 minutes - 100 points  
  • Awards Speech 2 to 4 minutes - 50 points  
  • Written Assignments: 250 points     

All written assignments must be turned in by the due date. No credit for late assignments!

      

A. Topic Selection 45/300 points  

You will turn in a list of 3 possible topics for each of the following assignments  

• Demonstration Speech Topics- 5 points

• Expository Speech Topics   - 15 points

• Persuasive Speech Topics     - 15 points

 

      

B. Bibliographies: 30/300

• Informative Bibliography – at least 10 sources - 15 points  

• Persuasive Bibliography – at least 10 sources    -15 points

      

C. Outlines: 85/300

• Demonstration Speech Working Outline     - 15 points  

• Informative Speech Working Outline             - 15 points 

• Informative Speech Presentation Outline   - 20 points  

• Persuasive Speech Working Outline               - 15 points

• Persuasive Speech Presentation Outline      - 20 points 

        

 E. Peer Evaluations: 40/300

• Expository Speech Peer Evaluations – 20 points

• Persuasive Speech Peer Evaluations - 20 points

      

 F. Self Evaluation: 50/300

You will write an essay comparing your Demonstration speech and your Persuasive speech. After watching the video of your both speeches you will write a comparative Self Evaluation Essay.

  • Web Lessons 200 points

There will be 10 Web Lessons. Each Web Lesson will include;

  • Topics from the text to study
  • Virtual Field Trips to enhance your study of topics from the text.
  • Homework Assignment worth 10 points.
  • Quiz worth 10 points. There will be true/false, multiple choice & short answer questions.
  • All Web Lesson Assignments will be due on Sunday evening the week they are assigned.  See the schedule for due dates. No credit for late work.

Final Exam: 100 points

There will also be a comprehensive essay exam. The exam will require the students to demonstrate their knowledge of effective public speaking techniques. 

  • Attendance & Participation: 50 points
  • All Zoom and GoReact sessions are mandatory. You will present your speeches and practice your listening skills/being an effective online audience evey Wednesday.  All written assignments and asynchronous assignments must be submitted online on time.

No credit for late work!

Final Grade: Out of 1,000

an "A" grade for 90% or 900 points and above.  

a "B" grade for 80% or 800 points and above.  

a "C" grade for 70% or 700 points and above.  

a "D" grade for 60% or 600 points and above.  

an "F" grade for anything below 59% 599 point
