College Skills 731 GED/Hiset Language Arts/Social Sudies

Secion 8285, Summer 2020  

Course Description

This is a GED/Hiset Language Arts/Social Studies course. This class prepares you to take either the GED or Hiset in Reading, Writing and Social Studies. At the end of the 8 weeks you will be assessed to see if you can take the GED or Hiset in these areas. 

Student Learning Outcomes

After completing this course you will be able to carry out the following exams:

Achieve GED/Hiset ready level in the GED/Hiset Academy or Post test in exam books for either one

Take practice tests in language arts and social studies showing you are ready for the GED/Hiset exam.

Or successfully pass the GED/Hiset exam in either Reading, Writing or Social Studies.

Class Meetings

We will meet via ZOOM every Tuesday at 9:30am.  

Course Topics

1. Reading for meaning:

  • Identify main idea and details
  • Cite evidence in the reading that supports what text is saying
  • Understand inference
  • Organize ideas
  • Analyze elements of fiction/non-fiction: character,plot, setting, theme, tone
  • Compare and contrast ideas in a text

2. Writing:

  •  correct grammar and usage in writing and speaking
  • effective word choice for meaning and style
  • figurative language
  • academic and vocabulary to understand text effectively
  • sentences and paragraph structure/transition words
  • argumentative essay writing using claims to support argument
  • clarity of organization in developing an essay
  • comparing two opposing arguments and developing an opinion supported by evidence

3. Social Science

A.Reading skills applied in the following content areas:

  • Civics and Government      (GED 50%) (HiSet 38%)
  • History                                 (GED 20%) (HiSet 38%)
  • economics                            (GED 15%) (HiSet 18%)
  • Georgraphy                          (GED 15%) (Hiset 6%)

B. Specific reading skills:

  • I.d. central idea and make inferences
  • analyze relationships between social studies materials
  • analyze facts, opinions and values in social studies context
  • evaluate authors' reasons and reliability of their evidence
  • understanding author's purpose and arguments
  • interpret graphs and charts

Dropping the Class

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it. A student may be dropped from any class when that student's absences exceed 50%of the total hours of class time. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact the instructor to avoid being dropped from the class.

Attendance

You are expected to attend at least half of the classes offered. We will meet via ZOOM once a week.  You will be expected to complete your assignments and participate in GED/HiSET Academy remotely.  If you are showing progress in your in class work and work on the GED or Hiset Academy, you will most likely receive a pass. It is to your advantage in order to pass the GED or Hiset to attend as many classes as you can. You are also able to enroll in as many sections of Language Arts/Social Studies as you like. The other instructor and I will keep track of your attendance and progress in course work and collaborate to give you a pass or no pass.

Pass‐NoPass (P/NP)

CSKLS 731 is a noncredit course. However, attendance, class participation, and showing satisfactory progress in attaining language arts or social studies skills is necessary to pass or receive a SP in the reading, writing or language arts section  of either the GED or HiSET test are the main components of your final grade.  Possible grades to be issued at the end of the course are:

  • P = Pass.You have accomplished all the necessary skills for this course.
  • SP = Satisfactory Progress.You are continuing to work on your skills within a certain level, but have not completed them all yet. You are encouraged to come back for “CSKLS 732, GED/HiSET Prep: Math & Science (Part 2),” and continue to work on them.
  • NP = No Progress.We have made a study plan and you have been attending, but you have not completed enough work to show progress. You should return the next semester to retake this course, and start working on your assignments.
  • W = Withdraw.You do not have a study plan and have not attended enough hours to show progress. Come back the next semester to retake this course and we’ll help you get started!
  • It is necessary each class period to document what you did on your assignment sheet and have the instructor sign it so at the end of the 8 weeks you can show what work you accomplished during that time. This is how you will be graded along with class attendance and participation in lab.

The instructor will post announcements on the Announcements page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences. Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.
