Course Description

This course covers the popular graphics software program Adobe Illustrator. Topics include the creation, modification and formatting of vector objects and type, importing/exporting graphics, live effects, and other Illustrator tools.

Depending on your Section #, you will be meeting online or in-person. Homework & Tests are all submitted online. Online students are welcome to attend the in-person class (and this is encouraged if you find yourself having trouble with the online work.)

I usually respond to emails within 24 hours on weekdays, 48 hours on weekends (late Friday through Sunday & Holidays).

Course Web Site

Students (both online & in-person) will use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, required reading, required videos*, submitting assignments, viewing classmates' work, sharing resources, and viewing grades.

*Note: Not all videos required for the class are captioned. Contact the instructor as soon as possible if you will need captions.

Textbook

There are no textbooks required for this course this semester. However, I am recommending Adobe Illustrator Classroom in a Book. (and will most likely make it required next semester.) I have been trying to maintain a PDF for many years, but Illustrator has been changing too fast, so I am going to teach to this book. The 2019 version is currently published, and the 2020 version will be out soon. Either is ok by me. The Library has a copy of the 2019 version.

The textbook can be found online in web or print version (to buy or rent) on Amazon. The bookstore should have some copies as well, and the library should have one on reserve.

All others materials will be accessed through Canvas.

Required Software

• Adobe Illustrator CC - 2019+ version - Note: you can use this for free in the campus computer labs, library, and during class. You can also find discounts on the Adobe Creative Cloud at CollegeBuys.org, or on the Adobe website.
• If you have an older version of Illustrator, you should be able to complete most of the assignments for this class. I do not teach to the older versions, so you are responsible for identifying the differences. It will also be your responsibility to contact me in advance and/or find a more current version if you find you cannot complete a project.
• You may need Acrobat Reader to view PDFs. On the Macintosh, you can also use the Preview app.

Dropping the Class

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it. A student may be dropped from any class when that student's absences exceed ten percent (10%) of the total hours of class time. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact the instructor to avoid being dropped from the class.

Attendance

For face-to-face courses, students who fail to attend the first class meeting may be dropped by the instructor. For classes that meet online, students who fail to log on and initiate participation by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time of the first day of the class may be dropped by the instructor.

Pass‐No Pass (P/NP)

You may take this class P/NP. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online with TLC or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. With a grade of C or better, you will get P.

You must file for the P/NP option by the date listed above. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade. If you are taking this course as part of a certificate program, you can probably still take the class P/NP. Check with a counselor to be sure.

Instructor Announcements

The instructor will post announcements on the “Home” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences.

Late Policy

All assignments are due at 11:59pm on the due date. A late submission will receive a 3% penalty per day late.

Exams

There will be online midterm and final exams. The material comes from the book, required reading (class lectures notes), videos/in-person lecture, and supplemental materials. If any exam is missed, a zero will be recorded as the score. No late submissions will be allowed without prior arrangement. It is your responsibility to take the exams by the due date.

Grading Policy

Click the “Grades” link in Canvas to keep track of your grades. I usually grade once a week and post grades and comments in the Canvas gradebook.

Regardless of points, all assignments are placed in weighted categories as a portion of your overall grade:

• Projects - 40%
• Discussions - 10%
• Quizzes - 20%
• Assessment - 30% (including midterm & final projects)

Grades will be assigned as follows:

Grade	Percentage
A	90% - 100%
B	80% - 89%
C	70% - 79%
D	60% - 69%

If taking Pass/No Pass (C/NC) you need at least 70% of the total class points and complete the midterm exam and the final exam to pass the class.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. Students are encouraged to share information and ideas, but not their work. See these links on Plagiarism:
