Course Description

An introductory course to learn and apply the skills needed to conduct research efficiently and effectively.  Catalog Information on Course Content is found at SRJC Course Outlines.  

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course you can expect to:

  1. Analyze a research need
  2. Find information effectively and efficiently by using a variety of search techniques
  3. Access needed information in multiple publication formats
  4. Evaluate the quality and relevance of information sources
  5. Recognize several ethical and legal issues related to the use of information

Course Web Site

  • This course combines traditional, face-to-face and online instruction.
  • Students will use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, submitting assignments and in-class discussion submissions, sharing resources, and viewing grades.
  • Canvas Mobile App is great for reading material and checking grades.  It is not recommended for writing or submitting quizzes or assignments.  

Textbook & Storage

There is no required textbook. All reading material will be provided via our Canvas class site: www.canvas.santarosa.edu   

You will need a way to store your in-class work towards the Final Project.  Your choice of a flash drive, Google Docs or similar document storage is sufficient.  Please be ready to use your choice of storage in class.

Dropping the Class

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it. A student may be dropped from any class when that student's absences exceed ten percent (10%) of the total hours of class time. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact the instructor to avoid being dropped from the class.

Attendance

  • You are expected to attend every class session in this short 6-week course.  
  • Every class session will include hands-on activities and discussions carefully selected to match SRJC Student Learning Outcomes and Library and Information Science field standards (For full explanation see ACRL Framework for Information Literacy 
  • Your participation in class discussion helps each member of our class and many hands-on activities done in class help build your final assignment.  
  • If you must miss a session you, please contact me via Canvas Inbox.
  • If there is a online discussion for that week, you may make up the points if you participate in the course discussion for the week.  If there is no discussion for that week, the points can be made up with the extra credit points in the final project.

Communication

  • I expect you to share confusion or questions regarding the course, assignments or the syllabus well before deadlines or final class session.  
  • Post your question first to the Canvas Discussion Board called COURSE QUESTIONS since it is possible that your questions are shared with other students.
  • Please use Canvas Inbox feature to communicate with me.  I will respond as soon as possible and within 36 business hours (not on weekends).
  • I will post announcements through the Canvas Announcements Page throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences. It is important that you go to the Settings link in the Course Navigation Menu on the left and click on the Notifications to adjust settings to meet your needs. It is your responsibility to maintain an active email account and update your information.

Pass‐NoPass (P/NP)

Student may choose the P/NP option on their Student Portal or by submitting a P/NP card at one of the Admissions and Records Offices. The P/NP grading option must be selected prior to 30 percent of completing the class. Please refer to the deadline date for each class. P/NP units are not counted in grade point average (GPA). See a counselor in Admissions and Records for more information. 

Late Policy

  • Weekly assignments are due on Mondays by 11:59pm PST on the due date.
  • I will accept a total of ONE late assignment per semester--accepted until 11:59pm PST of the fifth class session:  July 17, 2018.   

Reading Quizzes and Final Exam

  • Each week there will be a quiz covering the reading material for the upcoming class session.  Each reading quiz is due on Monday at 11:59PM on Canvas.
  • There will be one final exam available on Canvas.  It is an “open-notes” exam for which you are allowed to use any course material to help you answer the exam questions.  There will only be one attempt for the final exam allowed.  
  • Final exam will be given in class on Tuesday, July 24. No late submissions of the final exam will be accepted.  

 Grading Policy

Click the “Grades” link in Canvas to keep track of your grades. I grade once a week and post grades and comments in the Canvas gradebook.

If taking Pass/No Pass you need at least 70% of the total class points and complete the midterm exam and the final exam to pass the class.

Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.

Collaborating on or copying of tests or homework in whole or in part will be considered an act of academic dishonesty and result in a grade of 0 for that test or assignment. Students are encouraged to share information and ideas, but not their work. See SRJC's statement on Academic Integrity.
