Course Syllabus

UPDATED SYLLABUS & SCHEDULE

Required Books & Videos:

  • Some course readings will be posted on Canvas – You are expected bring them to class, either in electronic format or printed!

  • NOTE: The JC Bookstore is expensive. I do not encourage you to get books from there. Buy from Amazon for the best rates. Use your SRJC .edu address to get a student discount on Amazon Prime for unlimited 2 day shipping.
  • The Epic of Gilgamesh: An English Version with an Introduction; rev. ed. N. K. Sandars, trans. New York: Penguin, 1972. (ISBN 9780140441000)

  • Beowulf: A Prose Translation. David Wright, trans. New York: Penguin, 1957. (ISBN 9780140440706)

  • Johns, Geoff, et al. Superman: Secret Origin. New York: DC Comics, 2011. (ISBN 9781401232993)

  • Hamill, Mark, et al. Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope. DVD. Directed by George Lucas. 20th Century Fox. (ASIN: B000FQJAIW)

  • Schwarzenegger, Arnold, et al. The Terminator. DVD. Directed by James Cameron. 20th Century Fox, 2001 (1984). (ASIN: B00005N5S5)

NOTE: We will either watch the films on class time or schedule an alternate time to view the films together (I haven't figured it out - they're both longer than our class period).  Both are available in the library. The Terminator is currently available at dvd.com (the Netflix disc thingy). The 1977 release of Star Wars Ep. IV is hard to find. It looks like only the Special Edition is available from dvd.com (The Special Edition is the one in which George Lucas updated the special effects & made some plot changes - it is not ideal for this class. The edition noted above offers the unremastered, not special edition as a bonus feature on the second disc.) At any rate, you don't have to buy them, unless you're super interested, but you will need to be sure you watch them!
