I advise this ranked order of importance if your budget is tight:

  1. A Bible (to bring to class, we’ll use it at most class meetings) Several copies in the library
  2. Ancient Readings posted on Canvas (printed or in electronic format to bring to class)
  3. Perpetua’s Journey 
  4. The New Testament: A Historical Introduction (either 5th or 6th edition) Several copies in the libbrary

 

Recommended Books:

  • Joel B. Green & Lee Martin McDonald, eds; The World of the New Testament: Cultural, Social, and Historical Contexts (2017) (ISBN 9780801098611)

    • Collection of more detailed scholarly essays on the backgrounds to the world of early Christianity, designed for students. Great info, for those who are very interested. This is already in the library. 

  • Hallie Fryd & Julia Gfrorer, Martyrdom: The Coloring Book (2015) (ISBN 9781942186069)

    • This is literally a coloring book. It’s fun!! This will not be in the library. It's a coloring book!

  • Steven Ross, Marked (2005) (ISBN 9781596270022)

    • A graphic novel reimagining of the Gospel of Mark. Will not replace reading Mark for class! I've requested that the library purchase this.

  • Steven Ross, Blinded: The Story of Paul the Apostle (2008) (ISBN 9781596270916)

    • A graphic novel reimagining of the life of Paul. Will not replace reading Paul’s letters or Acts of the Apostles for class! I've requested that the library purchase this.
