The course syllabus is akin to ( like)  a contract between the instructor and the student.

The instructor provides the student a document (the Syllabus) that clearly indicates the format of the course and the guidelines for the course, the timeline of chapter readit and  topic lecture coverage; the due dates for the course requirements that include:  Assignments Discussions, Quizzes and Exams. And the expectations that the instructor has of the student in regards to conduct and behavior in class and all other information related to the course requirements.

Therefore, a student whose goal/intent it is to be successful in the course, finds it beneficial to read the course syllabus/contract and adhere to the format and guidelines for the course, and to the expectations that the instructor has of the student regarding classroom conduct and all other information related to the course. Then the student is better able to plan and manage the demands of the course given  the many other  demands that they have in their life outside of the course.  

This is an on-line format course 

This  is an On-line course, and you are required  to use a computer and go On-line ( on CANVAS) to complete and submit  all course requirements that include, completing and submitting  Quizzes and Exams, and completing and submitting Assignments and Discussions .Canvas is a Learning Management System ( LMS).There will be no hardcopy  of the Quizzes, Exams,  Assignments and the Discussions . For your course work to be evaluated and scored, the work has to be submitted  on –line /Canvas. Any course work  for any reason, submitted  via e-mail will not be evaluated and you will receive a zero for that particular course requirement. 

To stay informed about due dates of Quizzes, Exams Assignments and Discussions and submit course requirements in a timely manner. 

To keep abreast of the format of this  course, the topics covered, the timelines/due dates  of the Quizzes, Exams,  Assignments and  Discussions ; the guidelines to completing and submitting the Quizzes, Exams, Assignments  and Discussions on-line(on Canvas), the instructions for  completing each of the Assignments and  Discussions,  your current  grade, contacting your classmates and connecting with them,  and contacting  your instructor , you are required  to  click and read the information  on the following tabs on the left hand side  of the course  page, that include : Home, Syllabus, Announcements, Modules, People  and  Grades. Everything related to this course is on the tabs on the left hand side of the course page.

Required Software

Computers, Technology and Internet Access

Computers and technology  can fail at  the most inopportune moment. Therefore, please have a back-up plan. Computer or technology failure, or that you do not have access to the Internet in your home, will not be an acceptable excuse in this course  for not submitting the respective course requirements on the specified due date and time.

You have access to computers and to  the Internet  at the  SRJC libraries on the  Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. You also have computer access and Internet access  at your  town library, at an internet cafe, or at your friend/s.

Resist from waiting until  the last minute to  start any of the course requirements. Starting the course requirements for submission early and not waiting until the last minute might also allow you to exercise the back-up plan when computer and technology failure occur or that you do not have access to the Internet in your home.

What you need to know about Canvas 

Canvas is a Learning Management System ( LMS). In this course you are required to complete and submit all course requirements that include, completing and submitting Quizzes and Exams, and completing and submitting the Discussions .

Please note that the Canvas clock will close the respective course requirement promptly at 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time ( PST) on the indicated due date; regardless that you were just a minute or two  later than  11:59 pm PST in submitting the course requirement.   

"Canvas would not allow me to submit my Quiz, or Exam, Assignment  or Discussion "  will not be an acceptable excuse in this course  for not submitting the respective course requirements on the specified due date and time. Canvas will not allow you to submit the respective course requirement after 11:59pm  PST on the indicate due date regardless that you submitted your work  one or two minutes after 11:59pm PST,  regardless of what time you started the course requirement,  whether you are finished or unfinished with completing  the course requirement, or whether  or not you have hit the Submit tab. Therefore, start and complete  the course requirements for submission early, and  do not wait until the last minute.

For your submitted  course work to be evaluated and scored the work has to be submitted  on-line/ Canvas. Any course work  for any reason, submitted  via e-mail will not be evaluated and you will receive a zero for that particular course requirement.

Required Textbook

We have one textbook for this course.  Plan to read and prepare to discuss the assigned chapter/s as indicated in the course syllabus, in the weekly To Do List,  as well on the link in the  respective weekly Module on the course page. I will amplify select topics with lecture, demonstrations, activities, and media.

Please note that all the questions for the Quizzes and Exams will come from the content of the respective chapters, in the 11th. edition of the required text book. Hence, please purchase the 11th. edition.

Catalog Course Description 
: Development of the child from prenatal life to the adolescent years with emphasis on emotional, intellectual, social, and personal growth and development.

Instructor's Course Description: This course, PSYCH. 4, Child and Adolescent Psychology  will give you a general introduction to the major concepts and principles used in the field of Developmental Psychology, and provide you with an organizing framework for understanding  cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development from pre natal ( before  birth)  development to the end of adolescence ( approximately 18 to 25 years) in you  and in others.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1.  Analyze and apply biological and environmental theories to explain cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development of the individual from the prenatal period through childhood and adolescence.
  2.  Describe and apply the research methods that are used to study child and adolescent psychology.


Student Learning Outcomes

 Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1.  Distinguish among significant theoretical perspectives on the development of the child.
  2.  Differentiate between chromosomes and genes, recessive and dominant traits, and monozygotic and dizygotic twins.
  3.  Discuss chromosomal and genetic abnormalities relevant to the psychological maladjustment of the child.
  4.  Describe how psychological and environmental factors such as maternal stress, nutrition, teratogens, sexually transmitted diseases, and drugs influence the development of the child.
  5.  Examine the brain structures, intellectual growth, perceptual processes, memory and language development of the child in the infancy, childhood and adolescent years.
  6.  Explain how attachment, social deprivation, child abuse and neglect, day care, temperament, and gender differences influence the infant's social and emotional development.
  7.  Discuss the influence of parenting styles, siblings, peer interactions, and gender roles in the early childhood years.
  8.  Describe the factors that contribute to and delineate treatment strategies for childhood obesity, eating disorders, elimination disorders, ADHD, and learning disabilities.
  9. Provide causal factors and treatment options for separation anxiety, conduct disorder, childhood depression, and drug abuse in the middle childhood and adolescent years.
  10. Discriminate among the various theories that describe the adolescent's self-concept, emotional, cognitive and moral development.

NO LATE WORK POLICY

Please note the NO LATE WORK policy in place in this course. You are required to submit all components of each Assignment , Discussion,  Quiz,  and Exam, on the due date indicated and no later than 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (PST) on the indicated due date. 

Submitting any components of the  Quiz, Exam, Assignment, Discussion, at a later time or date than the due date indicated is not an option in this course. Please note the due dates of the respective Quiz, Exam, Assignment  and Discussion  on the course page on the respective  link  in the  weekly Module.

Due dates are  also indicated  on the weekly "To Do List" link in the respective weekly Module. Furthermore, due dates are also indicated under  the tabs  " Coming up" and "To Do" in the top,  right hand, corner, of the Home page, as well as on the bottom of the Syllabus page under “Course Summary”. You are  required to submit all components of the respective Quiz , Exam Assignment and  Discussion, partial work is not an option, failure to submit all components of the respective Quiz, Exam, Assignment  and  Discussion will  result in  zero (0) points  for that particular course requirement . 

Please be advised that last minute emergencies (which often do occur) do not constitute a reason for not getting the course requirements  done and submitted on time. Start pacing  your self and be prepared for emergencies that will inevitably come up.  So plan ahead, resist from waiting until  the last minute to  start any of the course requirements and support yourself to finish and submit all work by and on the specified due date and time.

Please note there will be no  make up opportunity  for the  non -submission of the  course requirements that include: Discussion, Quizzes and Exams. For example, if you  miss completing and submitting  any course requirement because  you are traveling, or you forgot the course requirement  was due on the specified date, or you had computer problems, or you waited till the last minute to complete and submit the course requirement ,  etc. you will receive a zero for that course requirement.  All course requirements are on-line ( on Canvas ), you are expected to start, complete and submit all course requirements  on- line (on Canvas) and on time. Assessment 

In order to assess your progress in this course you will be required  to complete  and submit  on-line ( On Canvas) , multiple-choice Quizzes, multiple-choice Exams, and complete and submit essay format  Assignments and  Discussions.

The due date for  each of the Quizzes, Exams, Assignments  and Discussions are clearly  indicated on the links in the respective weekly Modules, as well as on the weekly "To Do List" link  in the respective weekly Modules. In addition, the due dates can also be found on the top, right  hand side of the Home page under the tabs   “Coming up" and "To Do"  for this course, as well as on the bottom of the Syllabus page under “Course Summary”. 

Course Requirements & points breakdown  

 540 points - 18 Multiple Choice Quizzes (30 questions each quiz, and each quiz is worth  30 points)

360 points -  6 Multiple Choice Exams (60 questions each exam, and each exam is worth 60 points)

320 points – 16 Forum  Assignments  ( each Assignment is worth 20 points each)  

360 points - 6 Discussions ( each Discussion is  worth 60 points each)   

    20 points – “Test-Run” Discussion

  1,600 points  - Total number of points possible in this course.

Course  Grading

Your grade at the end of the semester  is based on the points that you accumulate during this course, divided by the total number of possible points in this course (1,600 points ). 

If you wish to know how you are doing in this class at any time during the semester, go to  the left hand side of the course Canvas  page and  click on the Grades tab to view all the  points  you have earned thus far in all the course requirements you have submitted  to date. The Grades page gives you a breakdown of the coursed requirements you have submitted as well as the course requirements that you have not submitted. The breakdown indiates the total number of points you have earned thus far and it gives you a percentage  

I will grade on a simple percentage basis with 90% of the total points necessary for an "A", 80% for a "B", 70% for a “C” , 60% for a “D” and 50% for an “F”.  

It is my hope that you will support yourself  for success and start,  complete, and submit each course requirement on and by the specified due date and time. The due date for  each of the Quizzes, Exams, Assignments  and Discussions are clearly  indicated on the links in the respective weekly Modules, as well as on the weekly "To Do List" link  in the respective weekly Modules. In addition, the due dates can also be found on the top, right  hand side of the Home page under the tabs   “Coming up" and "To Do"  for this course, as well as on the bottom of the Syllabus page under “Course Summary”. 

 Quizzes 

The link for each  of the respective weekly  quiz  throughout the semester will  open/go live  from the start of each respective  new week  from  12:00am (0:00hr.), and will close on Saturday each week promptly at 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (PST). Hence, you can take each quiz as many times(multiple  times) as you wish  until its respective  due date. The highest score that you receive  from the multiple takes  will be recorded.  

You will  take 18  weekly  quizzes throughout the semester.    All quizzes are  multiple choice . Each of the weekly quizzes is  worth 30 points. You will complete and submit each of the weekly  quizzes  on line ( on Canvas) on the link in the respective weekly Modules page . Please note that whether it is a quiz or an exam, on Canvas the word  Quiz is used to denote (indicate ) both  a  quiz or an  exam.  Canvas Guide : How do I take a quiz? 

The Quizzes are practice for taking the respective chapter  Exams and  a constructive  way of identifying ideas,  concepts, theories,  that you may  have difficulties understanding and applying. 

Late work will not be accepted

Please note the Canvas clock will close the respective Quiz   promptly at 11:59pm  Pacific Standard Time ( PST) on the indicated due date; regardless of what time you started the Quiz,  whether you are finished or unfinished with completing  the Quiz , regardless that you were just a minute or two  later than  11:59 pm PST in submitting the course requirement.  or whether  or not you have hit the Submit tab. 

Each Quiz must be completed and you must click on the Submit tab no later than 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time( PST) each week on Saturday. If you fail to click on the Submit tab by  11:59 pm PST each week on Saturday, your Quiz  will not be scored and you will score zero for that particular Quiz .

 If you  miss completing and submitting the respective Quiz  because  you are traveling, or you forgot the respective Quiz  was due on the specified date, or you had computer problems, or you waited till the last minute to complete and submit the Quiz ,  etc.,  you will receive a zero for the respective Quiz.  All Quizzes must be completed and submitted  on-line ( on Canvas ) and on time. Resist from waiting until  the last minute to  start the respecrtive Quiz  and support yourself to complete and submit the respective Quiz  by and on the specified due date and time.

Exams

The link for each  of the respective Exams throughout the semester will  open/go live  on  the respective Monday of the Exam week from  12:00am (0:00hr.), and will close promptly on  the respective Tuesday of the Exam week   at 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (PST).  Hence, the respective Exam will be open for two (2) days, however, you are required to start and complete each respective Exam in one attempt. Each of the 6 Exams is timed, you will have 1 hour 20 minutes from the moment you start, to complete each exam, and hit the Submit tab.**Please note : You are allowed 1 attempt only for each respective  Exam

You will take 6 Exams throughout the semester.  Each of the respective Exam is   due on Tuesdays  throughout the semester. Each exam is  multiple choice You will complete and submit each of the 6 exams on line ( on Canvas) on the link in the respective  Modules page . Please note that whether it is a quiz or an exam, on Canvas the  word  Quiz is used to denote (indicate ) either a  quiz or an  exam. Late work will not be accepted

Forum Assignments

The link for each of the respective Forum Assignments throughout the semester will open/go live from the start of  a  respective  week  from  12:00am (0:00hr.), and will close on the indicated  respective Tuesday promptly at 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (PST)). 

You are required to complete and submit 16 Forum Assignments. Each  Forum Assignment throughout the semester is due on the indicated respecrive  Tuesdays 

Class discussion is one of the learning tools in a course. The purpose of each Forum Assignment is  for students to exchange ideas and information, articulate their thoughts and  comments . Each  Forum Assignment  serves as a means of learning. The Forum Assignment  is the equivalent of  a face-to face, classroom discussion.  Therefore, since  this is an  On-line class,  you are required to participate in the   16  required  Forums  Assignments  in this course.

The  topic  of  class discussion for each of the Forum Assignment  may include, an idea, theory, or concept pertaining to development and  developmental stages a. The instructions for the respective Forum Assignment  will appear on a link in the respective weekly Module on the Canvas page. To complete and submit each Forum Assignment , you must click on the Post Reply tab on the bottom, left corner of the respective Forum Assignment  instruction page on the  respective link in the weekly Module on the Canvas page.

Your thoughts and comments for each respective Forum Assignment   must be in essay format,  single spaced, and  no less than 250  words. You are required to  indicate  the word count on the bottom of your essay format response. Your response  must be in formal language; use of inappropriate language, swearing, abbreviations, texting  format is not allowed nor accepted. Use of small case "i" when referring to yourself, or using small case alphabet to start a new sentence is not allowed nor accepted and it will have negative consequences on your grade. 

Your  response to your 1 classmate's thoughts and comments for each respective Forum Assignment  must be in essay format,  single spaced, and  no less than 125 words  each. You are required to  indicate  the word count on the bottom of your essay format response. Your response to your classmate  must be in formal language; use of inappropriate language, swearing, abbreviations, texting  format is not allowed nor accepted.  Use of small case "i" when referring to yourself, or using small case alphabet to start a new sentence is not allowed nor accepted and it will have negative consequences on your grade.

 You are required to complete  each and  all of  the parts  of each, respective  Forum  Assignment . You will  not get partial credit for partially completed work. Each  Forum Assignment is due   at 11:59 pm PST  on  the  indicated due date.  If you fail to compete and post your  thoughts and comments in  the respective   Forum Assignment   by the specific due date and time (11:59 pm PST) you will score zero ( 0) points  on the  respective  Forum  Assignment .

Please note  that the  content of your  response to  the instructor’s prompts and your  response to your classmate's post  must be  visible on the page.   Therefore an attachment of  a Word doc or PDF etc. or a link   is not acceptable and it will result  in the instructor not reading your submission and  you will lose all  possible  points for the particular Forum Assignment .  

Late work will not be accepted. Each  Forum  Assignment must be completed and you must click on the Submit tab no later than 11: 59 pm Pacific Standard Time( PST) and on the due date indicated. If you fail to click on the Submit tab by the due date and by 11:59 pm PST your   Forum Assignment will not be scored and you will score zero for that particular  Forum Assignment .

Any part  of the respective  Forum  Assignment submitted via e-mail will not be evaluated and you will receive a zero for that particular  Forum Assignment. Please do not approach me to extend the due date or time or to open the submission back up. I will not  consider your request nor accommodate your request.

Any component of the respective Forum Assignment  submitted via e-mail will not be evaluated and you will receive a zero for that particular Forum Assignment.

Discussions 

The link for each of the respective Discussions throughout the semester will open/go live from the start of a respective week  from  12:00am (0:00hr.), and will close on a respective Thursday   promptly at 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (PST)). 

Throughout the semester, all students will complete and submit 6 Discussions. Each Discussion throughout the semester is due on respective  Thursdays. Each Discussion will  include, your essay format response to the instructor’s prompts complying to any and all  other requests (such as completing a survey, or uploading a photo or address of a website)  made by the instructor related to the respective Discussion; and your response to one classmates' response to the instructors prompts. Each  Discussion must be completed and  submitted  on -line ( on Canvas), on the link in the respective  Modules page  . Any Discussion for any reason, submitted  via e-mail will not be evaluated and you will receive a zero for that particular Discussion. Each Discussion is worth 60 points. 

The instructor’s  prompts are related to a particular topic covered in the respective chapters in the required textbook. The instructor’s prompts, and the instructions for completing  and submitting each Discussion, will appear on a link in the respective weekly Module on the Canvas page. To complete and submit each Discussion, you must click on the Post Reply tab on the bottom, left corner of the respective Discussion's instruction page on the  respective link in the weekly Module on the Canvas page.

Please note that your   responses to the instructors’ prompts must be written  in essay format, you must  use formal language;  you are required to   write in full sentences , use appropriate language. There is no swearing, abbreviations, texting  format,  or use of small case "i" when referring to yourself, or using small case alphabet to start a new sentence in your responses to the instructor’s prompts.in full sentences and paragraphs .  Your responses to the instructors’ prompts must be at least 500 words. You are required to indicate the word count at the bottom of your response to the instructor's prompts. 

Your  response  to your classmate’s responses to the  instructors’ prompts  must be written  in essay format, you must use formal language; you are required to   write in full sentences , use appropriate language. Please note  that the  content of your  response to  the instructor’s prompts and your  response to your classmate's post  must be  visible on the page.   Therefore an attachment of  a Word doc or PDF etc. or a link   is not acceptable and it will result  in the instructor not reading your submission and  you will lose all  possible  points for this Discussion . 

You are required to complete  all the components of each Discussion . You will  not get partial credit for partially completed work. Failure to complete and submit all components of each of the Discussions will result in  zero (0 )points  to you for that particular Discussion. 

Each Discussion is due  by  11: 59 pm Pacific Standard Time( PST)  on the indicated due date .  If you fail to click  the Post Reply tab by  11:59 pm PST on the indicated due date,  your Discussion  will not be scored and you will score zero for that particular Discussion.

Please note  the Canvas clock will close the respective Discussion  promptly at 11:59pm  Pacific Standard Time ( PST) on the indicated due date; regardless of what time you started the Discussion,  whether you are finished or unfinished with completing  the Discussion , regardless that you were just a minute or two  later than  11:59 pm PST in submitting the Discussion, or whether  or not you have hit the Submit tab. If you fail to click on the Submit tab by the due date and by 11:59 pm PST your Discussion  will not be scored and you will score zero for that particular Discussion. Any component of the respective Discussion  submitted via e-mail will not be evaluated and you will receive a zero for that particular Discussion.

Protocol for communicating with your instructor and your classmates on-line

I really enjoy receiving  e-mails from students. And I enjoy office visits from students.   And I really appreciate the enthusiasm that most  students  show for the course and the course requirements.

I would like for you to read the following information so that we are all on the same page when it comes to communicating  online . 

If you have a question about something related to the course, you can either visit me in my office or you could communicate with me  via e-mail or by clicking on the “” link in the WELCOME MODULE.  Please read the following to ensure that you get a reply from me to your e-mail.

There is an email feature inside of Canvas , hence you can e-mail me from the Canvas page of this course. You can also email me at : nnasseem @santarosa.edu 

Please be aware that I am teaching 6 classes  this  semester.  Therefore, every time you e- mail me, please remember to identify yourself and indicate your first name and last name in your ending salutation, the course name, the section number of the class in which you are enrolled .

In addition, to the information listed in the previous sentence, please also include in your e-mail , a beginning salutation such as Hello Ms. Nasseem or Dear Ms. Nasseem and an ending salutation such as Sincerely, or Thank you, then your first and last name, the course name, the  section number of the class in which you are enrolled.

Please do not address me as “Hey” _____, nor send me an e-mail without  a beginning and  an ending salutation, or without your first and last name, course name and section number. I will most likely not read  an  e-mail such  as that, and as a result,  you will not get a reply from me.  The same guidelines also apply when we have an e-mail trail going between us. 

When you are speaking with your fellow classmates in the Assignments and  Discussions , you are expected to adopt the same protocol in terms of using a beginning salutation such as Hello _First name , last name____, and ending salutation  such as Cheers, Good Wishes or  any other such appropriate salutation.

Please use formal language, do not use texting language . Politeness and graciousness is mandatory. Sometimes people in the on-line environment are emboldened to present themselves and treat others rudely and ungraciously. Rudeness and unprofessional conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in this course. You are encouraged to conduct yourself in a friendly, mature, professional manner in your interactions with your classmates and your instructor.  

When can you expect a reply to an email question message that you sent me, the instructor? 

During the school week, (Monday  through Friday) I will check email once a day, during my office hours. Please be aware that if you email me in the evening, after 7:00pm .  I may not respond to your email until the following day. 

Please note that I will not check email over the weekend, and any messages sent after 7:00 p.m. on Fridays  will not be returned until the following Monday. Lastly, please be sure to check your email  during the week,  for messages and/or audio files from me pertaining to this course. Please also remember that I will be sending emails only to your SRJC account. So please let Admission & Records know your correct and current e-mail address. 

Generally, you can expect a response to your email question  within 24 hours during weekdays. However, for messages sent over the weekend, you can expect a response on Monday.

Academic Honesty 

All written work is to be original. Please do not jeopardize your college career or your grade in this class by using papers than are not written by you, or using "recycled papers" from other classes , cheating on quizzes and exams  or plagiarism (copying verbatim from an outside source and failing to identify  the source  and omitting the use of quotation marks ) .Students who plagiarize or cheat may be suspended for one or two class meetings by the instructor and referred to the Vice President of Student Services for discipline sanction, in cases of egregious violation. Dropping the Class

If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop it. A student may be dropped from any class when that student's absences exceed ten percent (10%) of the total hours of class time. It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact the instructor to avoid being dropped from the class.
