Interface and Navigation Explained

Navigation/interface definitions

Interface and navigation are essential aspects of web and interactive design. They determine how easy it is for users to interact with a site or app, travel through it, and accomplish their initial goal in coming to it.

  • Interface (UI: User Interface and UX: User Experience) refers to the look and feel of the site and how it is designed for user interaction. Consider it the "lens" through which the designer lets a user look at, experience and interact with the content.
  • Navigation is the system of buttons/links/menus used for organizing and moving around the site. Structure design is a key aspect of developing effective navigation.

These two elements work hand-in-hand to create the "user's experience" of a site. Poor interface/navigation design will quickly deter users. A site visitor will not waste time with a site or app that is frustrating to understand and navigate.
