Week 2 Page 2: Step 1
STEP #1: Do Background Research
Before having a first client meeting, it's essential to do some background research about the client, their business, industry, competition, and current website or online presence, etc.
When you look at the client's existing website, make notes about your initial impressions as a first time visitor.
-
Assess the information it contains (content)
Is there too much content? Should it be split into separate sections/pages? Is it relevant to the site's goals?
-
How easy it is to find what you might need?
Think about what information a visitor would be looking for. Can you zoom in on that information? Is the navigation/page structure clear or confusing?
-
What kind of mood or emotion does the site create?
Think of a few adjectives you'd use to describe the mood or vibe of the existing site. Are they on target for the goals of the site? Do the graphics/layout/color choices send the right message?
Also consider looking at any print literature the client produces including brochures, advertisements etc.
Take a look at their competitors' sites and consider the similarities and differences. In what ways are they more or less effective?
Imagine that you've been asked to redesign the following site...
-
http://www.auntibarbarasdogdaycare.com/
Links to an external site.
As a first-time visitor looking for dog boarding, how quickly can you find out the most important information? What is your first impression/emotion about the site?
Now look at this competitor's site...
-
http://www.paradisepetresorts.com/
Links to an external site.
Is this site more user-friendly? Can you find the information more quickly? Does it have a different "vibe"? If so, ask yourself why.
If you were a dog owner, which site would you be drawn to? Which business would you trust your beloved "Fluffy" with?
Using the Results of Your Research
After your assessment, take notes on what you think the goals and needs of your clients and their users might be. Then, develop a targeted set of questions for the client that you can use to develop a Creative Brief for the project. (See next page for details.)
