THAR 10B:  The Business of Acting - Website Worksheet

INSTRUCTIONS

This assignment gives you a chance to take a “guided tour” of key resources and terms relating to the Business of Acting, including career preparation.  In each case, give yourself time to "tour" the website.  Several require membership to view many of the contents, but there are lots of great stuff to look at without needing a membership to start.  Make notes about what you learned while looking at each of the sites.

I.  AUDITION TECHNIQUES and CONTRASTING MONOLOGUE PACKAGES:  (10-20 minutes)

Do some google searching and find two helpful websites and/or YouTube clips relating to audition techniques and/or contrasting monologue packages.  In each case, cite the URL (you can insert the link by using the link symbol in the Rich Text bar above your text box)  and summarize the benefits of the source you found below.

Look at the website for one public university theatre program that offers a B.A. or B.F.A. focusing on Acting ("4-year"):

IV.  CAREER PREPARATION - SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMS:   (10 minutes)

You have a summer professional training program right here at SRJC called SRT ("Summer Repertory Theatre") Links to an external site..  Tour the website and record three things you learned about the program below:

V.  FUTURE EMPLOYMENT - THEATRES:  (5 minutes)

Look at the website for one professional theatre that you’d be interested in working for someday.  See if the website gives information on how they do their casting, and when they would normally conduct auditions.  (PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THE THEATRE TO FIND OUT.)

VI.  FUTURE EMPLOYMENT - Agents, Casting Directors, and Artistic Directors:  (10 minutes)

The following are three common positions that you might encounter if looking for acting employment.  Do a bit of online research and find out a simple answer to each of the following positions, as well as noting how they are different from one another.

Agent:

What is an agent and what do they do?

How can an actor contact an agent?

Casting Director:

What is a casting director and what do they do?

How can an actor contact a casting director?

Artistic Director:

What is a (theatrical) artistic director and what do they do?

How can an actor contact an artistic director?

VII.  FUTURE EMPLOYMENT -  ACTOR JOB BOARDS:  (5 minutes)

VIII.  OTHER ACTOR RESOURCES:  (3-5 minutes each = 15-25 minutes)

Look at each of these websites and note at least one key benefit you could get from each as an actor.
