Week Six Overview: Start Here

Welcome to Week Six!

Learning Goals: This week you will begin the Research Essay. Due to the size of the research assignment, it has been broken into several small assignments that are spread over three weeks. Participating in each part of the process is essential to your success :-)

  • Brainstorm and share possible research topics
  • Select an essay topic and begin finding resources
  • Locate and share resources from SRJC's Library Databases
  • Become familiar with theoretical aspects of incorporating research

Research Assignment Part One: Canvas Forum Posting and Responding

As a precursor to the research assignment, post a news article (or other text) in the forum section on Canvas and pose a question to your classmates. The question should stimulate thoughtful responses (ie. “What do you think?” doesn’t count).

At this point you should be thinking about which social issue you would like to work with for your research project, and I highly recommend that your post be connected to the topic you are considering. The responses you receive may assist you as you begin defining your position.

  • Getting started: Go to our LibGuide and browse through the SRJC Library databases or view general online information sources. You may post an article, picture, comic, or video as your text.
  • Posting your article: Use the “permalink” when posting your article if it's from the library databases. Also, when posting your text, remember to include a brief (3-4 sentence) summary of your article that includes the main idea, title of the articles, author’s name, and publication.
  • Pose a thoughtful question to your peers regarding the content of your source.
  • Responses: Your responses should fully and thoughtfully respond to the question posed and offer an additional view or perspective to the conversation. Each response should be 150-250 words.

Research Assignment Part Two: Reading Assignment

The short excerpt from They Say, I Say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing provides an overview of theoretical considerations you should make when building an argument and integrating outside sources.

Research Assignment Part Three: Become Familiar with SRJC's Library Databases

SRJC Librarians have created library guides for this class. Within them you will find a range of resources that have been carefully selected and compiled to assist you with this particular assignment. Spend some time browsing the resources and write a discussion board post that provides a brief overview of two resources you located. The resources should be general tools used for this project -- not specific pieces of research for your topic. Do not duplicate resources provided within your peers' posts.
