Learning Outcomes for Week One

  • Introduce yourself and meet your peers through the Icebreaker Exercise
  • Create a classroom community through sharing profiles and creating Classroom Expectations and Values
  • Read texts selected to invoke reflection on your writing and thinking processes
  • Post in discussion board to share insights on readings
  • Respond to peers to create a conversation about reading assignments
  • Write a short essay that synthesizes readings and your experiences

Week One: Introductory Assignments

  1. As assigned in the welcome announcement, begin by inserting a profile picture (click on "account") and update your profile with a quick overview of your academic goals and personal interests.
  2. Then, read the course syllabus thoroughly (Course Headquarters). The syllabus is a contract that we enter into by committing to this class as teacher and learner, so please read the entire document.
  3. Now, introduce yourself and get to know your peers through the "WordART" Icebreaker Exercise.

After completing these foundational tasks, you are ready to begin the work within the first week of instruction.

Week One: Class Expectations and Values Discussion Board

Within our classroom community we will be confronting a variety of highly debatable topics. For our discussions, peer reviews, and group work to be productive we must always respect others’ opinions. Within the first week of class we will decide as a community how to best accomplish and ensure this goal. This is accomplished through the "Class Expectations and Values Discussion Board."

  • Please contribute by answering the questions posed and browsing your peers' responses.

Week One: Reading, Discussion Board, and Writing Assignments

The reading assignments for this week were selected to help you reflect on your writing and learning experiences. Doing so will provide you with a foundation for moving forward with learning new writing techniques and ways of thinking about learning. Enjoy!

  • Read all of the attachments under "Week One: Readings"
  • Post on the "Class Expectations and Values" Discussion Board
  • Post and Respond on the "Week One Readings Discussion Board"
  • Write a short essay that synthesizes the readings and your experiences
