Scoring & Match Duration
Colligate volleyball is currently scored through rally-scoring, meaning at the end of each rally someone has scored one point. A rally begins and ends with the whistle of the head referee. This can occur due to a fault occurring, which is defined as: any playing action that is contrary to the rules.
- This occurs when:
- The ball contacts the opponent's court,
- The opposing team has committed a fault,
- The opposing team is assessed a penalty or an opposing team member is disqualified.
- Duration is determined through the completion of a best-of-five match.
- A set (or game) is played to 25 points, or until a team has a two-point advantage (for example 26-24). The deciding set (5th set) is played to 15 points, or until a team has a two-point advantage (for example 16-14).
- A match is the completion of a team winning 3 sets, with a maximum of 5 sets played.
Rotating
- Prior to playing, a coach must submit a lineup for the team's starting positions. The lineup lists the 6 players in their starting zone position.
- The court is divided into 6 zones, 3 front row and 3 back row, with one-player per zone. The team rotates clockwise each side-out, with the server serving from zone 1. If the serving teams wins the rally, the server continues serving. If they lose, they rotate the next rally win.
- Once the lineup is turned into the scorer's table, the starting zone positions are set. Meaning, the players must rotate in the correct order, otherwise they will commit a fault.
- The players must start in the correct order, but once the ball has been initiated into the rally, the players can switch positions on the court. Overlapping occurs during serve receive when the pattern is not maintained, both horizontally and vertically.
Substitutions
- Each team is allowed 15 substitutions per set, with each player allowing unlimited entries with the the team limit.
- Once a player enters the game, they are required to enter and maintain the same serving order. Meaning, they cannot alter the serving order by entering for a different serving position.
- The libero does not require the use of a substitution. There are a multitude of rules for the libero, so please watch this video to cover them:
