Assignment 2- Latitude and Longitude

Please complete Section 2.4 and the Tutorials on that page BEFORE you do this Assignment..

Directions:

This assignment uses online maps to find latitude and longitude. If you aren't cheating, and are finding the locations or the latitude and longitude using the assigned maps, you will not be able to give me minutes and seconds or a decimal. If you use minutes or seconds or a decimal in your answers I will mark the answer wrong. Please only used the assigned maps. These maps are: Maps of the World Links to an external site. and the CIA Maps Links to an external site..  This assignment should not be completed using your phone..... you need the larger screen of a computer.

Answer these questions directly in Canvas. If you need assistance to turn in this assignment, review Unit 0.21 "Turning in Assignments".

For questions 1 -3, name the city, mountain, island or other distinctive place found at each of the listed positions.  You will be using the "Maps of the World" Links to an external site. online map to locate in what country the location is and then you will be using the appropriate, detailed "CIA Map" Links to an external site. to find the very specific latitude and longitude. When you use the CIA maps, select the Physiography Maps - they contain latitude and longitude. This is tedious but not difficult.

3. 24°S, 46°E

For questions 4 - 6, find the geographical coordinates for the following locations using the appropriate CIA Map Links to an external site. (do not use minutes or seconds or decimals!)

4. Port Maria,  Jamaica (use CIA Jamaica Map)
5. Stanley, Falkland Islands (use CIA Argentina map)
6. Moundou, Chad (use CIA Central African Republic map)

7. (no map required) The Length of the Equator is 24, 901 miles. Since the Equator pass through 360° of longitude, each degree of longitude at the Equator is approximately how many miles?

The Surface of the Earth is about 70% ocean, 30% land. Now consider the four quadrants of the Earth: NW, NE, SW and SE. Take a look at the World Map Links to an external site.

8. Which quadrant has the most land?
9. Which quadrant has the most ocean?

10 Name all of the countries through which the Tropic of Capricorn passes (exclude small islands). Use this map Links to an external site. or another online world map to answer this question.
